PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between James Vann (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tony Jaa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Vann comes to the cage accompanied by Lose Yourself- Eminem. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jaa gets caught flat footed, as Vann shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Jaa wants to sweep here but Vann controlling him for the moment.
Vann postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Vann pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Jaa is keeping the position for now.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vann tries to free his leg and advance position but Jaa is retaining full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Vann closes the distance and clinches up with Jaa, looking for a takedown. Vann pushes Jaa against the cage but Jaa circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Vann chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Jaa can pounce on him.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Jaa fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Vann.
Jaa throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Vann slips a jab from Jaa.
Jaa finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.

Jaa throws a head kick but Vann moves out of range.

and Vann counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Vann avoids the head kick by Jaa.
Jaa tries to clinch up but Vann circles away and keeps his distance.
Vann ducks under a wild hook from Jaa.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Vann gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Jaa uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Vann has time to react.
Jaa will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

and Vann holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Jaa comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.

Jaa throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Vann uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Jaa.

and Jaa counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Vann stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Vann closes the distance and clinches up with Jaa, looking for a takedown. Vann pushes Jaa against the cage but Jaa circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Vann looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Jaa buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Jaa lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Tony Jaa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Jaa clinches but Vann breaks the clinch

and Vann moves into the clinch.
A frustrated look appears on Vann's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Jaa fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Jaa pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Jaa wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Vann keeps control of Jaa as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Vann is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Vann takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Jaa is pushing Vann up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Vann lands a good knee to the midsection. Jaa won't want to take too many of those.
Jaa lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Vann backwards.
Vann is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Jaa pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Jaa obliges.

Vann pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Jaa tries to clinch but Vann moves out of range.

A bone on bone clash there as Vann blocks the leg kick.

Vann shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Jaa is trying to defend but Vann finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Jaa has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Vann is working away from the top position though.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to James Vann.
I think Jaa has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
