PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ping Pong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mao Ying (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ping Pong!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mao Ying!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Shigeki Fujiwara and Sosuke Kotani.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Horrible takedown by Ying or perhaps it was just good defense by Pong which made him look bad.
Ying shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Pong as he avoids it easily.

Pong drives through with a takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pong sitting in guard here, content to control.
Ying thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Ying is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Ying pulls Pong in close to his closed guard and prevents Pong from doing any damage or advancing position.
Ying wants to sweep but no luck.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ying is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Pong is controlling him.
Ying not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Pong not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Pong trying to control but Ying is working from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Pong scores with a takedown into Ying's guard.

Ying lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Pong!
Ying looks gassed!
Pong really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Pong regains half guard.
Ying wants to pass the guard but Pong is defending well.
Ying is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Pong is trying to maintain the position but Ying is very close to passing his half guard.
Pong knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ying on the ground.

Pong is positioning himself well to prevent Ying advancing to mount.

Ying is looking for a kimura but Pong is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Ying to get the leverage.

Pong not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Ying stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pong swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Ying postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Ying trying to control the position from guard on top but Pong is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Pong feints and as Ying raises his hands in defense, Pong changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Ying holds on and takes a little breather.
Pong preventing the sweep.
Ying keeping moving, preventing Pong from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ping Pong dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Ying tries for a takedown but Pong circles away easily

and Pong counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Pong.
Pong gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Ying.
Pong jumps guard but Ying stands there with Pong around his waist. Pong gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Pong drops down looking for an ankle pick but Ying pulls his leg out and moves away.
Ying misses with a takedown attempt - Pong sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Ping Pong has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mao Ying.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Ying is trying to control but can't.

Pong wants to free his trapped foot but Ying is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Ying is refusing to be controlled, as Pong sits in half guard.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Pong is looking to advance position but Ying won't allow it.
Ying slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Pong won't allow Ying to sweep him here.
Ying is breathing heavily.
Ying working a defensive guard here.
Ying keeping moving, preventing Pong from controlling successfully.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Pong accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Pong passes into half guard.
Pong perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Pong prevents Ying from improving his position.
Ying is trying to stand back up but Pong is controlling him

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Ying actively working from the bottom here.
Pong is looking to advance position but Ying won't allow it.
Pong is keen to just control but Ying is a slippery customer.
Ying has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Pong is working away from the top position though.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


An inside leg kick lands from Ying.

Ying looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Pong!
Ying trying to control but Pong is having none of it.

Ying moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Pong has worked his arm free - good work by Pong!

Pong manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Pong is staying active underneath Ying, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Ying is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Pong!

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.

Pong has managed to clinch.
Pong fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Ying has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Pong is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Ying stops a takedown attempt from Pong.

Ying wants the takedown. Pong is fighting it off but Ying persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Pong's guard against the cage.
Ying being controlled here momentarily.
Ping Pong overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Pong avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Mao Ying.
I think Pong has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
