PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ed Neto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Neto comes to the cage accompanied by Bad Boys - Bob Marley. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Smith!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Luis Engracia and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith keeps the fight on the outside.
Neto tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Smith paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Neto throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Smith's waist but Smith gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Neto off to one side.
Smith shoots in looking for a takedown. Neto tries to sprawl out of it but Smith keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Neto manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Smith misses with a two punch combination.
Smith looks for a takedown but Neto sprawls well.
Neto lands a head kick!


It looks like John Smith has been cut.

Neto gets caught flat footed, as Smith shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Neto tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Neto working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Smith.
Neto wants to get back to his feet but Smith is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Smith is looking to work some ground and pound but Neto has wrist control.
Smith throws a big right hand that misses.
Neto is trying to keep Smith in close.

Smith is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Smith stands up and waves to Neto to follow him.
Neto stuffs the takedown attempt from Smith. Smith gets slowly back to his feet.

Neto jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Smith walks away with a smile on his face. Neto gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Neto throws a head kick but Smith moves out of range.
John Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Neto throws a head kick that Smith semi-blocks.
Nice takedown defense from Neto. No joy for Smith on that attempt.

Neto rushes Smith and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Neto jumps guard.
Neto is pulling down on Smith's head. It's preventing any offense from Smith, at least for the moment.
Smith stops Neto from standing up.
Smith thows a big elbow that misses.
Neto is trying to keep Smith in close.
Smith throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Neto looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Neto wriggles free and stands up.

Smith closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Smith lands in his opponent's guard.
Neto pulls Smith in close to his closed guard and prevents Smith from doing any damage or advancing position.
Smith is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Neto swivels though and keeps the full guard.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Neto is on top in guard.

Smith pushes Neto off and gets back to his feet.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Smith tries to clinch there but Neto circles away.
Neto misses with a head kick.
Smith fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ed Neto dominated that round.
The cut man is working on John Smith's cut.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Neto throws a head kick that looked like it stung.

Smith closes the distance and clinches.

Smith has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Neto is trying to keep an underhook but Smith manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Smith takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Smith has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Smith decides to return to a standing position.
A nice leg kick lands there from Neto.
Neto misses with a few strikes there.
A head kick from Neto lands but Smith takes it in his stride.
Nice takedown defense from Smith. No joy for Neto on that attempt.

Neto throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Smith was covering up waiting for the punch and Neto finishes the takedown easily into guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Neto wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Neto seems keen to control Smith's posture.
Smith postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Neto has his hands on Smith's head, controlling the position.
Neto keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.
Smith throws a strike but Neto rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Smith wants to get back to his feet but Neto is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Smith doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

Smith is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Neto has Smith pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Smith manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ed Neto. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Smith is working for takedown but Neto is calmly controlling the position for now.

Neto keeps control of Smith as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Neto here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

Smith keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Neto's head.

That was a close second round but I would say that Ed Neto will probably get the nod.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Smith manages to escape to his feet.
Smith avoids a punch combination nicely.

Smith shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Neto napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Neto wants to get back to his feet but Smith drags him back down.
Neto takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Neto is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
John Smith has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Smith stands up and beckons Neto to his feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Smith fails with the takedown.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to John Smith.
I think Neto has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
