Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between James Howlett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Abe Patterson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Howlett comes into the arena with X-MEN blaring out of the sound system. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Patterson swats away the attempt to clinch by Howlett. Patterson cracks a nice hook into Howlett's ribs. Patterson tries to close the distance and clinch but Howlett swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Howlett tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Patterson was well out of range. Poor timing from Howlett. Patterson punishes Howlett's body with a nice straight punch. Patterson takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it. Howlett slips under a jab from Patterson. Howlett is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Patterson is controlling him well. Patterson tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Patterson has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Patterson wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Howlett, who protects the arm well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Howlett tries to escape but Patterson is in control. Patterson trying to control the action but Howlett is working from the bottom.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Howlett fails in his attempt to clinch. Howlett fails with an attempt to clinch.

We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Howlett tries to get out of the position. Patterson postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Howlett is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Patterson, into his guard. Howlett avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Patterson working for a triangle but Howlett defends it easily.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Patterson has his foot on Howlett's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Howlett works his way back into a safe position though. Patterson is trying to keep Howlett in close.

Patterson drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Howlett manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Patterson has Howlett in his guard. Howlett wants to get up but he can't break Patterson's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Abe Patterson has got the better of the ground game so far. Patterson takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
That's one minute gone in the round. Howlett won't allow Patterson to sweep him here. Howlett has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Patterson trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from! Patterson has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Howlett can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Howlett decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Patterson, up you get! Howlett tries to clinch there but Patterson circles away.

The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Howlett looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Howlett! Patterson is looking for a sweep. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Patterson can't do much from the bottom here.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Patterson is looking for a sweep. Patterson manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Howlett knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Patterson on the ground. Patterson is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Patterson looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Howlett decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
And that's the end of the fight! I would just about give that final round to Abe Patterson. I think Patterson has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
