PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Will Jackman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matheus Mendes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Will Jackman had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 206.3lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Will Jackman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matheus Mendes!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Daniel Cesar and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendes is looking to clinch.
Mendes throws a body kick that misses.

Jackman darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Mendes wants to get back to his feet.

Jackman is looking for a kimura but Mendes is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Jackman to get the leverage.
Jackman throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Jackman throwing shots but Mendes is blocking nicely.
Jackman not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Jackman seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Mendes does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Mendes throws a push kick but Jackman slaps the foot to one side.

Mendes clinches up with Jackman and pushes him back against the cage.

Mendes's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Jackman wants to get back to striking at distance but Mendes won't allow it.
Mendes gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Jackman.
Jackman keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Mendes's efforts to push away.
Jackman drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Jackman is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Jackman has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Jackman wants to control from the top but Mendes keeps moving.

Mendes utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mendes drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mendes is looking to take a break and control but Jackman is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Mendes looks up at the clock and then as Jackman takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Mendes smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Jackman is looking for a sweep.
Mendes tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Jackman dives in and grabs Mendes's left leg, looking for a takedown. Mendes pushes down on Jackman's head and hops out.
Nice sprawl there from Jackman as Mendes shoots in.
Mendes fails to land the takedown.
Mendes tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Jackman counters with a shoot takedown. Mendes fights it but they end up in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Will Jackman will probably get the nod.

Mendes will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Jackman pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Jackman wants to control the pace but Mendes is squirming around nicely.
Mendes really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jackman. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

I think Jackman has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
