Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Frank White! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, BJ Penn! The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Robert Douchet and Yves DeLean.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! White shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Penn as he avoids it easily. Penn tries to score a power double leg takedown but White sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Penn somewhat. White fails with the takedown and Penn counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. White manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. White is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Penn can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Penn manages to regain half guard. Good work. White thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Penn looking for submissions off his back. White has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. White thows a huge punch but Penn dodges it nicely.
White is pressing down on Penn's thigh, looking to free his foot. Penn is holding on for now. White moves into full mount! Penn won't be happy about that! Penn tries to lock up and control but White gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
That's one minute gone in the round. Penn sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though. Penn is looking for a sweep. White is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Penn controlling the leg, holding on to half guard. Penn is looking to improve his position.
White is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Penn sees it coming and defends easily. White throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. White lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Penn wants to improve his position but White is controlling well.
White is working for a kimura but Penn is defending it quite comfortably.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. White looks for a takedown but Penn sprawls well. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Frank White. That's going to take a lot out of him. White is breathing heavily. White is looking to clinch. White gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Penn moves into the clinch. Penn has picked White up - he's going for a ride! Penn dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard. Penn is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Penn looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
White moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn stops White from standing up. Penn trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! White looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Penn drops back looking for a leg! White is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and White manages to kick Penn off! Penn jumps back into White's guard. Penn trying to control the position from guard on top but White is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. White is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Penn tries to free his leg and advance position but White is retaining full guard.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Penn fails with a takedown attempt. White fails miserably with a takedown attempt. White really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. White tries for a takedown but Penn circles away easily and Penn counters with a single leg into guard. White didn't expect that. Penn tries to free his leg and advance position but White is retaining full guard. Penn scoring with some ground and pound. Penn sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed White's guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Penn seems to be working for a kimura but White defends the submission attempt. White moves into full guard.
White bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Penn's guard. White trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Penn has his foot on White's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. White works his way back into a safe position though. White is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. White cracks Penn with a solid left hand. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
BJ Penn dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Penn closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. White sneaks back into half guard. Penn wants to work for an arm triangle but White is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Penn flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
White is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Penn gets full guard. Penn is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Penn is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. White is aware though and is defending well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Penn has a closed guard, preventing White from standing up. Penn is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and White defends well. Penn had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. White defends it easily. White passes easily into side control. Nice work. Penn wants to control but White postures up. White thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. White working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked White off and has taken his back! BJ Penn has got the better of the ground game so far. White breaks Penn's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Penn looking for a guillotine here but White defends easily.
White got a little sloppy there for a moment and Penn has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, White has managed to get both his arms back between Penn's legs - danger averted. White pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Penn is keeping the position for now. Penn manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
That's four minutes gone in the round. White keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
White is working hard here to advance position. Penn quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Penn but it's paid off an White is forced to tap! Nice work by Penn.
