PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Grey Te Whena (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Batton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Te Whena comes to the cage accompanied by Garden Knome - Barbarella. Batton has chosen Why is the Rum gone? as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Jack Batton acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Grey Te Whena!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jack Batton!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Bruno Hogan and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Te Whena.
Te Whena slips a jab and a cross from Batton.
Batton lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

Te Whena tries to keep at a distance but Batton has taken the fight into the clinch.
Te Whena blocks an uppercut.
Te Whena is trying to drag Batton to the mat but Batton just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Te Whena escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Te Whena feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Batton is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Te Whena shoots in looking for a takedown. Batton tries to sprawl out of it but Te Whena keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Batton manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Te Whena has his foot on Batton's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Batton works his way back into a safe position though.

Batton drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Batton jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Batton must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Batton tries to hold on but Te Whena postures up.

Te Whena will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Batton wants to try and get back to his feet.

Batton throws the kick towards the body but Te Whena avoids it.
Te Whena looks to land a right hand but Batton moved out of range.
Te Whena tries for a takedown but Batton sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Te Whena does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Te Whena ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Batton moves away.
Batton will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Batton takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Batton fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Te Whena avoids it really well and circles away.
