PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jyrgen Lundin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and DJ Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jyrgen Lundin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, DJ Penn!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn throws a right hand that Lundin ducks under and follows up with a left that Lundin also avoids with ease.
Penn shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Lundin but Lundin pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Penn tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Lundin paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Penn moves into the clinch.
Lundin will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Penn up against the cage.

Penn manages to pull guard.
Lundin is stalling in the full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Penn keeping moving, preventing Lundin from controlling successfully.
Lundin with a flurry of punches that miss.
Penn wants to stand but Lundin is controlling the position.
Lundin trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Lundin trying to control the position from guard on top but Penn is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Lundin loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Lundin shoots and misses

and Penn moves into the clinch.
Lundin drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Lundin trying to stall but Penn improves his position.

Penn jumps guard.
Lundin looking to pass the guard.
Lundin stopping the sweep attempt from Penn.
Lundin is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Penn wants to stand and escape but Lundin is having none of it.
Lundin trying to control but Penn is working from the bottom.
Lundin is really struggling to control Penn but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Lundin works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Lundin prevents Penn from improving his position.
Lundin trying to control the action but Penn is working from the bottom.
Penn wants to get back to full guard.

Lundin is working for a submission of some sort.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Penn shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Lundin counters with a nice double leg into guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Lundin wants to pass the guard but Penn is keeping the position.

Penn manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Lundin misses with a takedown attempt - Penn sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jyrgen Lundin. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Lundin is breathing heavily.
Penn swings for the body but Lundin moves out of range.

Lundin seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Lundin wants to control from the top but Penn keeps moving.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Lundin decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

and Penn moves into the clinch.
Penn throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.

Penn breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
DJ Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Penn drives through and clinches with Lundin against the cage.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Lundin looking for a takedown.
Penn's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Penn manages to pull guard.
Penn wants to sweep but no luck.
Penn trying to control the position.
Lundin trying to control the position from guard on top but Penn is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jyrgen Lundin will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!


Penn looks to clinch

and Lundin counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Penn!
Penn tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Lundin moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Penn has worked his arm free - good work by Penn!
Penn is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Penn gets back to half guard.
Lundin is looking to take a break and control but Penn is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Penn tries to kick Lundin off but Lundin keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Penn trying to control here.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Lundin is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Lundin wants to control but Penn is keeping him busy.

Lundin looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Penn closes the distance looking to clinch

and Lundin counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Penn's guard now.

Lundin gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Penn pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Penn doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Lundin counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Penn!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Penn really wants to buck Lundin off and get back to his feet.
A nice elbow there by Lundin.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Lundin wants to control the pace but Penn is squirming around nicely.

Lundin with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Penn working to try and regain half guard.

Penn has left one of his arms exposed and Lundin doesn't need a second invitation. He's isolated it and locked on a tight armbar. Penn screams and taps out, obviously in a lot of pain. Hopefully there isn't permanent damage to that arm.
