Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Roger Gomez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
9 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, James Young! The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, William Peck and Yves DeLean.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gomez is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Young's half guard. Young is looking for a sweep. Gomez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Young trying to control from the bottom.
Young is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Gomez is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Young defends it well. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Gomez lands a nice short elbow. Gomez prevents Young from improving his position. Gomez throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Gomez is looking to take a break and control but Young is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Gomez sends Young crashing to the mat with a devastating uppercut! Gomez is motioning to the referee to let Young up. He wants to try and finish this one on the feet!
Young is rocked! Young misses with a leg kick. No luck with that takedown attempt from Gomez. Gomez throws a big overhand right that connects, sending Young tumbling to the canvas! Young is still in real trouble! Can Gomez finish him?

Gomez got a little sloppy there for a moment and Young has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Gomez has managed to get both his arms back between Young's legs - danger averted. Gomez drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Gomez jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Young seems to have recovered his senses. Gomez has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Young tries to land a sweep but no joy. Gomez lands a couple of decent looking shots. Young keeping moving, preventing Gomez from controlling successfully. Gomez postures up and lands a big shot to Young's brow. That's two minutes gone in the round. Gomez in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Young is on top in guard.
Gomez has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Young is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Gomez. After a battle for position, Young asserts his dominance and retains side control. Gomez gets back to half guard.

Young is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Gomez is just riding it out for now. Young eventually gives up the hold. Gomez actively working from the bottom here. Young looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Gomez with a short hammerfist. That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Young is trying to control the action in half guard but Gomez is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Gomez looks to throw the jab but Young is out of range. Young gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there. Young scores with a nice body kick.
Young slips a jab from Gomez. Gomez throws an overhand right that lands on Young's shoulder, as Young tries to avoid the shot. Young throws a front kick aimed at Gomez's knee but Gomez avoids it well. Young looks to land a combination but Gomez avoids it well. Young slips a straight right by Gomez. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Roger Gomez dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Gomez moves out of range of the leg kick from Young. Young throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Young throws a right hand that Gomez ducks under and follows up with a left that Gomez also avoids with ease. Gomez misses with a combination
and Young counters with a slapping leg kick. Gomez swings and misses with a shot to the body so Young counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Young looking to pass the guard. Gomez is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Young pushes down on Gomez's leg and manages to get into half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gomez avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Young. Gomez trying to control from the bottom.
Gomez looking for submissions off his back. Young is looking to advance position but Gomez won't allow it. Young is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Young wants to pass to mount but Gomez is defending the position. Gomez has hold of Young's hands but Young slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Gomez keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Gomez avoids the head kick by Young.
Gomez misses with a takedown attempt and Young counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena. Young misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Young tries to clinch but Gomez is having none of it. Roger Gomez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Gomez misses with a looping right. Young misses with a leg kick. Young ducks under a wild hook from Gomez. Young lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh. Roger Gomez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Young throws and low kick but Gomez moves out of range easily. Young takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Young manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Young is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. The fighters are battling for position here. Young manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Gomez avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

James Young showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Young knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Young is trying to control Gomez's posture but Gomez avoids it. Gomez advances nicely into full mount. Gomez is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Young can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Young had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Gomez defends it easily. Gomez gets to his feet. Young looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Excellent takedown into side control there by Gomez.
