Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Gorlan Karelin! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Fight Pride! The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Fedor Mirinova and Konstantin Menshow.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Karelin shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Pride is trying to defend but Karelin finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Pride is trying to stand back up but Karelin is controlling him
Karelin sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Pride defending well though. Pride won't allow Karelin to pass to mount. Karelin is looking to take a break and control but Pride is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Karelin will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Pride is trying to stand back up but Karelin is controlling him
That's one minute gone in the round. Karelin trying to control the pace. Pride is trying to escape back to his feet but Karelin uses the scramble to pass into side control.
Pride is looking to regain half guard here but Karelin keeps moving and retains side control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Karelin tries to keep at a distance but Pride has taken the fight into the clinch. Karelin lands a takedown into guard.
Karelin loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Pride pushes Karelin off and gets back to his feet.
Pride is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Pride misses with a takedown attempt so Karelin counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Karelin content to stall in guard here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pride wants to stand up but Karelin is controlling him. Pride looks gassed! Pride tries to land a sweep but no joy.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Pride controls Karelin momentarily but Karelin frees himself. Karelin sitting in guard here, content to control. Pride wants to stand and escape but Karelin is having none of it. Karelin has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Gorlan Karelin dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Karelin gets a takedown into half guard. Pride is trying to stand back up but Karelin is controlling him
Karelin throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Karelin takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pride scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Karelin manages to mount him!
Pride is breathing heavily. Karelin takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Karelin seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Pride for as long as he can get away with. Karelin wants to control the pace but Pride is squirming around nicely.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Pride really wants to buck Karelin off and get back to his feet. Karelin trying to control but Pride is having none of it. Pride is really trying hard to get back to his feet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Karelin controlling the pace for now. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Karelin trying to control but he's not successful this time.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Karelin lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Karelin fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Karelin can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Pride is looking to escape. The referee warns Pride that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Gorlan Karelin dominated that second round. That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!
Karelin looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Gorlan Karelin. Karelin fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Pride avoids it really well and circles away. Karelin tries to score a power double leg takedown but Pride sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Karelin somewhat. Karelin has a takedown stuffed. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gorlan Karelin. That's going to take a lot out of him. Pride throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Karelin misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Karelin circles away from the clinch attempt and Karelin counters with a shoot takedown. Pride fights it but they end up in guard. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Pride looking to control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Karelin won't allow Pride to get back to his feet. Karelin trying to control but Pride is working from the bottom. Pride pushes Karelin off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there. Karelin shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Pride napping and manages to drive through into side control!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Karelin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Pride keeps working. A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. Pride pushes Karelin away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Karelin gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Karelin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Pride keeps working.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Karelin controlling the position from side mount. Karelin trying to control the action but Pride is working from the bottom.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Pride is looking to get back to his feet here but Karelin is keeping cool and he's managed to take Pride's back. Fight Pride has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Karelin controls the position.
And that's the end of the fight! Gorlan Karelin showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Karelin, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
