PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Dennis Wise (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dave Kaplan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kaplan has chosen Tenderness by General Public as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dennis Wise!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 1, fighting out of New York, Dave Kaplan!
The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, David Schapiro and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kaplan shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Kaplan showed some decent athleticism there.
Kaplan seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Wise does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Kaplan throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Wise regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Kaplan.
Kaplan has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Kaplan steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Wise.
Kaplan fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Kaplan takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Wise throws a leg kick which misses Kaplan's front leg but catches the back leg as Kaplan tries to avoid it.
Kaplan looks gassed!

Kaplan takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Wise scores with a shot to the body.
This has been an exciting period of action!
A swing and a miss from Wise.
Kaplan circles away from the clinch attempt.
The fighters circle momentarily. Wise darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.

Wise sends Kaplan crashing to the mat with a devastating uppercut! Wise is motioning to the referee to let Kaplan up. He wants to try and finish this one on the feet!

Kaplan shoots in looking for a takedown. Wise tries to sprawl out of it but Kaplan keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Wise manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Kaplan is still on wobbly legs! Can Wise finish him?
Wise takes a swing at Kaplan's ribcage but misses.
Kaplan seems to have recovered his senses.
Kaplan bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Wise looks to throw the jab but Kaplan is out of range.

Dennis Wise has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dave Kaplan.

Wise throws a body punch but Kaplan moves out of range.

Kaplan closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Wise did well to prevent Kaplan getting side control.
Wise slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Kaplan throws and elbow that misses. Wise uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Kaplan's guard. Nice move by Wise!
Wise slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Kaplan can do anything to dispel that myth.
Wise wants to pass the guard but Kaplan is keeping the position.
Wise has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Kaplan is proving hard to escape from.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Wise sizes up Kaplan with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Kaplan tries to score a power double leg takedown but Wise sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kaplan somewhat.
Kaplan displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Wise throws out the jab.
Kaplan walks into a stiff left hand from Wise.
Wise tests Kaplan's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Wise missing with a left hand there. Kaplan was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Kaplan tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Wise swivels and escapes.

Kaplan is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Wise.
Kaplan bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Wise stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Wise wants it to stay on the feet.
Dennis Wise has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dave Kaplan.
Wise fails to land with a series of punches.
Kaplan throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Wise's waist but Wise gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kaplan off to one side.
Wise motions for Kaplan to come forward. Wise throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Wise dodges the ground and pound from Kaplan.
Kaplan throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Wise works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.

Kaplan is just content to waste time from the top position. Wise takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Kaplan prevents Wise from getting back to his feet.
Wise keeping moving, preventing Kaplan from controlling successfully.
Wise tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Kaplan landing with the ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Wise looking to hit a scissor sweep but Kaplan is one step ahead there.
Kaplan working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Wise's head.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Kaplan shoots in looking for a takedown. Wise tries to sprawl out of it but Kaplan keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Wise manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Wise.

A combination from Wise does no damage.

Kaplan landing punches.
Kaplan sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Wise throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Kaplan on the side of the head.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Wise connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Kaplan's hands.

Wise fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Kaplan takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Wise misses with a hook.
Wise connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Dennis Wise is winning the standup battle so far.
Kaplan walks straight into a right hand from Wise - that's dropped him! Wise jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Kaplan from any more punishment! Kaplan complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.
