The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Segel tries to clinch up.
Machida fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Segel gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Machida counters with a nice body kick.

Machida shoots in for a takedown but Segel shows good takedown defense.

Segel tries to keep at a distance but Machida has taken the fight into the clinch.

Machida turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Machida manages to end up in side control.

Machida has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Segel utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Segel is working an open guard so Machida takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Machida lands a jab to Segel 's midsection.

Machida shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Segel napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Machida decides to stand back up. Machida steps back and let's Segel get back to his feet.

Machida shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Segel manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Segel has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Machida off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Machida has Segel pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Machida pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Segel tumbling to the mat - Machida dives into Segel 's guard.

Machida has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Segel tries to kick Machida off but Machida keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Machida wants to lay and pray for a moment but Segel keeps working.

Machida is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Segel is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Lyoto Machida.

Segel is looking to regain half guard here but Machida keeps moving and retains side control.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Machida is looking to take a break and control but Segel is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Segel tries to buck Machida off but Machida is having none of it.

Segel really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Machida. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Segel has given up his back, trying to stand up. Not clever.
Machida has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Segel 's body.
Machida seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Segel for as long as he can get away with.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Segel is trying to get back to his feet but Machida has full control of the position and if anything, Segel has just worked his way into a worse spot.
