Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Corey Thomas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hitoshi Matsumoto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Matsumoto has chosen Otep - Blood Pigs as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Corey Thomas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Hitoshi Matsumoto!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Matsumoto shoots for a double leg takedown but Thomas sprawls well. He's pushed Matsumoto's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Thomas looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Thomas.

Matsumoto has closed the distance and engaged Thomas in a clinch.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Matsumoto lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Thomas backwards.

Matsumoto pulls guard.
Matsumoto looking to hit a scissor sweep but Thomas is one step ahead there.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Matsumoto is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Thomas is controlling him.

so Thomas counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Matsumoto scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Thomas misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Matsumoto.

Matsumoto fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Thomas, pushing him back against the ropes.
Matsumoto wants a takedown but no success here.
Corey Thomas has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Hitoshi Matsumoto.

Matsumoto breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Matsumoto shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Matsumoto is landing with some decent strikes but Thomas is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Matsumoto is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Thomas has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Thomas knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Matsumoto on the ground.
Matsumoto lands a heavy elbow.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Matsumoto cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
The referee warns Thomas that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Matsumoto sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Matsumoto has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
A nice elbow there by Matsumoto.
Thomas on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Thomas tries to get out of the position.
Matsumoto can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Thomas is looking to escape.
Matsumoto takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Matsumoto lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matsumoto thuds his right hand into Thomas's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Matsumoto will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Matsumoto's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Thomas avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Matsumoto has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Thomas off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Corey Thomas is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Matsumoto clinches.

Thomas has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Matsumoto regains guard immediately.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Matsumoto is on top in guard.
Matsumoto lands a couple of elbows.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

and Thomas counters with a head kick. That will keep Matsumoto thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

Thomas changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Matsumoto looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Thomas blocks the strikes from Matsumoto.
Matsumoto is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Matsumoto pushes Thomas away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Thomas gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Hitoshi Matsumoto showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Thomas throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Matsumoto tries to close the distance and clinch but Thomas swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Matsumoto is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Matsumoto striking off his back but it's not causing Thomas any problems.
Hitoshi Matsumoto has got the better of the ground game so far.

Matsumoto manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Matsumoto tries to close the distance and clinch but Thomas swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

and Thomas counters with a shoot takedown. Matsumoto fights it but they end up in guard.

Matsumoto doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Matsumoto wants to get back to his feet but Thomas is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Matsumoto tries to close the distance and clinch up against the ropes but Thomas paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Thomas misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Thomas shoots in but Matsumoto avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Matsumoto works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

Thomas is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Matsumoto defends well.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Matsumoto passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Thomas!

Hitoshi Matsumoto comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Matsumoto has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
