8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, David Johnson! The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, George Francis and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! VanVactor drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. VanVactor throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. VanVactor thows a big elbow that misses. VanVactor is looking to stand up but Johnson won't let him. Johnson keeping moving, preventing VanVactor from controlling successfully. VanVactor slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. VanVactor trying to control the position from guard on top but Johnson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. VanVactor throws a big right hand that misses.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Johnson is looking to take this fight into the clinch. David Johnson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Johnson tries to clinch up. Johnson tries to clinch there but VanVactor circles away.

Johnson moves in looking to clinch but VanVactor pushes him off. VanVactor changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Johnson looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Johnson is letting VanVactor control him for a moment. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Johnson can do anything to dispel that myth. VanVactor tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it. VanVactor controls the position from side control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. VanVactor advances to full mount. VanVactor misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

That's three minutes gone in the round. VanVactor throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
VanVactor unloading with bombs! Johnson tries to lock up and control but VanVactor gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. VanVactor fails to take his opponent's back. VanVactor with good strikes from the mount here! VanVactor tries to control but Johnson wriggling away. VanVactor is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Johnson can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

That's four minutes gone in the round. VanVactor looking for a guillotine from mount but Johnson is having none of it. VanVactor trying to control but he's not successful this time. VanVactor postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Johnson looks a forlorn figure.
VanVactor thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage. Johnson takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. VanVactor working for a submission but Johnson is keeping him at bay. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as VanVactor accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. VanVactor trying to control the position from guard on top but Johnson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. VanVactor is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Johnson is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

VanVactor wants to control from the top but Johnson keeps moving. VanVactor looking to sit in guard and control but Johnson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The ground and pound from VanVactor seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johnson did well to prevent VanVactor getting side control. VanVactor with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. VanVactor is looking for a kimura here.
