The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Newsome fails in his attempt to clinch.

Newsome feints and as Williams raises his hands in defense, Newsome changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Williams can do anything to dispel that myth.
Newsome postures up in Williams's guard and throws a big left but Williams blocks it.
Newsome stays in close to Williams's body and controls the position.
Newsome wants to control from the top but Williams keeps moving.
Williams tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Newsome changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Williams tries to avoid it but Newsome manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Williams to the ground. Williams escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

and Newsome counters with a single leg into guard. Williams didn't expect that.
Newsome stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Williams swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Newsome thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Newsome drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Newsome jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!

and Williams counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Newsome working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Williams doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Williams manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Williams has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Newsome is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Williams.
