Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Nicholas Smirnov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Dmitry Matveev!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Aleksandr Martynov and Vladimir Khabensky.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Matveev circles away from the clinch attempt.
Smirnov checks a low kick from Matveev.
Horrible takedown by Smirnov or perhaps it was just good defense by Matveev which made him look bad.

Smirnov scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Smirnov laying and praying for a moment but Matveev takes advantage and regains half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smirnov tries to stand and escape but Matveev is controlling the position.
Matveev pushes Smirnov off looking to stand but Smirnov dives back in and keeps control.
Smirnov is trying to control. Matveev wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Nicholas Smirnov.
Matveev keeps the fight on the outside.
Smirnov tries to clinch up but Matveev circles away and keeps his distance.

Matveev is not content to let Smirnov control the position.
Matveev wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Smirnov remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Smirnov tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Matveev paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Matveev is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Smirnov gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Smirnov drops down looking for an ankle pick but Matveev pulls his leg out and moves away.

Matveev will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and Smirnov counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Smirnov.
Matveev wants a takedown but no success here.

Smirnov gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Matveev regains guard.

Smirnov is trying to trip Matveev. He has hold of a leg but Matveev is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Smirnov persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
