PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Caleb Sampson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alejandro Lara (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sampson comes to the cage accompanied by Hurt. Lara has chosen Furious Angels as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Caleb Sampson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Alejandro Lara!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Robert Twigg and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lara fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Lara has a takedown stuffed.
Sampson tries to clinch but Lara is having none of it.
Lara shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Caleb Sampson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alejandro Lara.

and Lara counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lara is taking a breather. Sampson says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Sampson is controlling Lara's trapped leg to prevent Lara from advancing to side control.

Sampson tries to improve position but can't.

Lara is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Sampson has escaped the position, nice work there.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Sampson avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Lara.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Lara decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Lara is thwarting Sampson's attempts to control the position.
Lara throwing shots but Sampson is blocking nicely.
Lara not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Lara wants to take a breather but Sampson is having none of it.
Sampson keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Sampson tries to roll over but Lara keeps him under control.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Sampson looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Lara!

Lara keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Sampson takes his opponent's back. Perhaps a chance to lock up a rear naked choke here.
Sampson is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.
Lara is keeping busy.
Lara tries to escape the position.
Lara breaks Sampson's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Lara trying to control but Sampson is working from the bottom.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Lara trying to control the position from guard on top but Sampson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Lara landing with the ground and pound.
Lara lands a couple of elbows.
Lara wants to control from the top but Sampson keeps moving.
Lara controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Despite being in the dominant position, Alejandro Lara just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Lara shoots and misses
and Sampson cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Lara misses with a takedown attempt - Sampson sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Lara shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alejandro Lara dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Lara shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Sampson pinned against the cage. Sampson gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Lara misses with a takedown attempt

and Sampson counters by moving into the clinch.
Sampson fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Sampson breaks the clinch.
Sampson feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Lara's calf.

Sampson shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Sampson was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Lara is trying desperately to improve position.

Lara is breathing heavily.
Lara tries to control Sampson's head but Sampson pushes him back down and moves quickly to lock up an arm here - he's swung around for an armbar! Will he get it??? Yes! Lara is tapping out! Lovely Jiu Jitsu there!

Sampson trying to control but Lara is having none of it.

Lara bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Lara postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Lara trying to control but Sampson is working from the bottom.
Lara tries to free his leg and advance position but Sampson is retaining full guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Lara throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Lara wants to control from the top but Sampson keeps moving.
Lara has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Sampson throws a right hand that Lara ducks under and follows up with a left that Lara also avoids with ease.

and Sampson counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Lara is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Sampson is looking to control Lara's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Sampson avoid being mounted?

Sampson has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Lara is working away from the top position though.
Lara landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Lara thows a huge punch but Sampson dodges it nicely.

Sampson misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

so Sampson counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Sampson lands a couple of elbows.
Lara lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Sampson!

Sampson is flailing around, obviously not happy about being mounted. Lara locks hold of one of his arms and spins for an armbar. He's got it! Sampson is forced to tap!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:26 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Alejandro Lara!
