Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between John Gordon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brighton Johnston (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johnston has chosen Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart as his entrance music. Brighton Johnston struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 172.8lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Johnston takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt. No luck for Johnston with that takedown attempt. Gordon looks for a takedown but Johnston sprawls well. Gordon throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean. Johnston doesn't succeed with the takedown and Gordon counters with a series of strikes. Johnston will be more careful next time no doubt. Johnston looks gassed! Johnston misses with a takedown and Gordon makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick. John Gordon has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Brighton Johnston. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Johnston blocks a leg kick. Gordon finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Gordon lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Gordon.
It looks like Brighton Johnston has been cut.

Gordon fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Johnston avoids it really well and circles away. A jab-cross combination lands for Gordon and sends Johnston crashing to the mat! Gordon follows him down to the mat - Johnston regains half guard but he's not out of trouble yet!
Johnston is rocked! Gordon is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Gordon knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Johnston on the ground. Johnston works his way to full guard. Good work. Gordon has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Gordon won't allow Johnston to sweep him here. Gordon has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Johnston is proving hard to escape from.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Johnston tries for a takedown but Gordon circles away easily letting Gordon counter with a right hand.
That has opened up Brighton Johnston's cut even more. Johnston tries to keep at a distance but Gordon has taken the fight into the clinch. Gordon lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Johnston backwards. Gordon jumps into guard, dragging Johnston to the mat.
Gordon wants to get back to his feet but Johnston is in a dominant position and won't allow it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gordon scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Brighton Johnston seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Good standup being displayed there by Gordon as he connects with a hook.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A clash of legs there as Johnston blocks the low kick. Gordon lands a jab-cross combination. Johnston misses with a takedown attempt and Gordon counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Gordon. Gordon avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Johnston has his foot on Gordon's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gordon works his way back into a safe position though. Gordon wants to stand but Johnston is controlling his posture from full guard.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Gordon misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Johnston misses with a takedown attempt and Gordon counters with a straight punch to the midsection. Gordon clobbers Johnston with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johnston is trying to keep an underhook but Gordon manages to get the takedown into half guard. Gordon tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Johnston. Johnston wants to control but Gordon is keeping busy.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Johnston showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Gordon.
Gordon shoots in but no luck this time. John Gordon is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Johnston shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Gordon counters with a single leg into guard. Johnston didn't expect that. Johnston working a defensive guard here.

Gordon would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Johnston working for a triangle but Gordon defends it easily.

Gordon pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Johnston with a lazy takedown attempt and Gordon counters with a three punch combo that has Johnston backing up. Johnston nods at Gordon to acknowledge the strikes. John Gordon has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Brighton Johnston. Gordon scores to the head and body with a nice combination! Johnston is trying desperately to land a takedown but Gordon is having absolutely none of it. This is turning into a bit of a nightmare for Johnston.

Gordon pushes Johnston against the cage but Johnston circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Johnston has his takedown stuffed and Gordon moves into the clinch. Gordon lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage. Gordon goes for a takedown attempt but Johnston pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Gordon shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Johnston sprawls well. Johnston wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gordon gets slowly back to his feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Gordon. That's going to take a lot out of him. Both fighters are breathing heavily.
