The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Vatali will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Vatali uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Rene. Vatali looks to land a combination but Rene avoids it well. Rene shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. Rene tries to bum rush Vatali with a series of wild strikes but Vatali uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Vatali drives through with a takedown into guard. Vatali is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Rene is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Rene has escaped and now he's on top! Rene would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Vatali controlling the position. Vatali looking to hit a scissor sweep but Rene is one step ahead there.
That's one minute gone in the round. Vatali controls Rene momentarily but Rene frees himself. Rene preventing the sweep. Vatali controls Rene momentarily but Rene frees himself. Rene trying to stand up but can't free himself from Vatali's guard. Vatali manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Vatali misses with a head shot.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Rene blocking the ground and pound. Vatali throwing shots from mount but they're not landing. Vatali controlling his opponent. You get the feeling that Rene really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Vatali looking to control but Rene is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Vatali cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
It looks like Shane Rene has been cut.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Vatali throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage. Vatali looking to ground and pound but Rene is blocking nicely. The referee warns Rene that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
