PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jim Kang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Leo Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Johnson's choice of entrance music: tribal entrance. Jim Kang has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jim Kang!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Leo Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, John Mangel and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Johnson feints and as Kang raises his hands in defense, Johnson changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Kang had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Johnson is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Kang Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Johnson's back instead.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Johnson trying to control the position but Kang manages to sink in the hooks.

Kang looking for the RNC.
Kang somehow managing to miss with a strike from the back.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Kang is hanging on to Johnson's back as he tries to escape.
Johnson is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Kang patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?

Johnson is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Kang gets his way!

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Johnson manages to reverse the position and now he's in Kang's guard. Nice work there by Johnson.

Johnson not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Johnson wants to pass the guard but Kang is keeping the position.
Johnson must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Johnson chips away with some ground and pound.
Kang could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Johnson drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Kang keeping moving, preventing Johnson from controlling successfully.

Kang looking for a guillotine here but Johnson defends easily.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Johnson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
I looks like Johnson might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Kang is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Kang is breathing heavily.
Johnson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kang swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Johnson with a nice head shot there.

Kang has his foot on Johnson's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Johnson works his way back into a safe position though.
Johnson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kang. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Kang looking to hit a scissor sweep but Johnson is one step ahead there.
Johnson cracks Kang with a solid left hand.

Kang working for a triangle but Johnson defends it easily.
Johnson wants to control from the top but Kang keeps moving.

Kang looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Kang is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Kang is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Johnson defends it well.
Johnson has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Kang is working away from the top position though.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kang trying to control the action but Johnson is working from the bottom.
Johnson wants to improve his position but Kang is controlling well.

Johnson is looking to improve his position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Kang tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Johnson blocks a head kick by Kang.
Leo Johnson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kang looks to score with a jab to the body but Johnson is just out of range.
Kang fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Johnson on the side of the head.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Kang, as that shot connected.

Johnson looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jim Kang dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Kang dips to his left and cracks Johnson with an uppercut!
Kang throws a head kick but Johnson moves out of range.

Johnson closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Jim Kang overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Kang gets full guard.
Johnson works over Kang with some ground and pound from guard.

Kang is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Johnson rolls with it to try and escape but Kang cranks on the arm and Johnson is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:33 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Jim Kang!
