PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Marvin De Leon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chris Baker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Baker has chosen Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Marvin De Leon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Chris Baker!
The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Taro Takaoka and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Baker looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Marvin De Leon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
De Leon takes a swing at Baker's ribcage but misses.
De Leon scores with a sloppy right hand. Baker should have avoided that one.
De Leon works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
De Leon ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Baker moves away.
Baker getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
De Leon tries to bum rush Baker with a series of wild strikes but Baker uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
De Leon fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Baker manages to avoid it.
De Leon lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Baker circles away quickly and effectively.
De Leon throws a right and a left that both miss.
Baker misses with a hook.
De Leon throws a series of punches but Baker avoids them all with ease.
Baker has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Baker throws out a loose jab but De Leon uses good head movement to avoid it.
De Leon uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Nice shot lands for Baker.
De Leon throws a good cross that connects.

De Leon gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Baker to score an easy takedown into full guard.
De Leon looking to hit a scissor sweep but Baker is one step ahead there.

De Leon has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
De Leon is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
De Leon throws a jab but it's blocked by Baker.
De Leon scores with a jab. Baker acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

Baker has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Baker there as he acknowledges the shot.

De Leon throws a right and a left that Baker avoids nicely.
De Leon misses with a body shot.
De Leon keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Baker misses with a straight left.
Baker avoids the body shot from De Leon.
Baker fails with a takedown attempt.
Marvin De Leon has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chris Baker.
De Leon paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

De Leon fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
De Leon slips a jab and a cross from Baker.
De Leon misses with an uppercut.
De Leon thuds his right hand into Baker's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
De Leon misses with a few strikes there.
De Leon tries to bum rush Baker with a series of wild strikes but Baker uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
De Leon lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Baker takes a jab right on the kisser.

De Leon gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

De Leon wants to sweep here but Baker controlling him for the moment.
Baker stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. De Leon swivels though and keeps the full guard.

De Leon had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Baker defends it easily.
De Leon wants to sweep but no luck.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
De Leon is working hard here to advance position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marvin De Leon dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


De Leon swings for the body but Baker moves out of range.
Baker drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
De Leon looks to throw the jab but Baker is out of range.
Danga de danga de dang - De Leon scores with a four punch combination!
De Leon scores with a crisp jab that stopped Baker in his tracks.
De Leon has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from De Leon there as he acknowledges the shot.
Baker takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
De Leon leaves Baker with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Baker shoots for a double leg takedown but De Leon sprawls well. He's pushed Baker's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
De Leon lands a nice shot to the body.
Baker misses the body punch
and Baker takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
De Leon throws a right and a left that Baker avoids nicely.
De Leon lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
De Leon misses with a wild combination.
De Leon changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.

Baker with a poor takedown
and De Leon makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Marvin De Leon has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chris Baker.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
De Leon lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
De Leon cracks a nice hook into Baker's ribs.
De Leon throws a nice looking combination but Baker bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
De Leon throws a series of punches but Baker moves out of range.
Baker closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
De Leon thows a body shot but no joy.
De Leon comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

De Leon throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Marvin De Leon is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
De Leon throws a series of strikes that have Baker backpedaling.

De Leon scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Baker doesn't succeed with the takedown
and De Leon counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Baker thinking.
Baker has a pretty nasty looking mouse under his right eye.

Baker drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

De Leon tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Baker tries to hold on but De Leon pushes him away.

Baker is in a horrible position here. De Leon smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
De Leon blocks Baker's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
Baker is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marvin De Leon dominated that second round.
That's time! Back to the action! And we move into the final round!


De Leon throws a nice looking combination but Baker bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
De Leon lands with a nice body punch.
De Leon misses with a double jab

and Baker counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Baker content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
De Leon keeping moving, preventing Baker from controlling successfully.

De Leon isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Baker stacks De Leon on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Baker!
De Leon has one of Baker's arms on lockdown, trying to prevent him from doing any damage.

Baker is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but De Leon is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Baker takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

De Leon is not content to let Baker control the position.
De Leon is looking to reverse the position.
De Leon is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Baker off and has taken his back!
De Leon tries to keep control of the position but Baker is staying busy.
Baker manages to reverse the position and now he's in De Leon's guard. Nice work there by Baker.

Marvin De Leon is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Baker passes to full mount!

Baker goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now De Leon is on top in guard.

Baker has his foot on De Leon's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. De Leon works his way back into a safe position though.

Chris Baker has got the better of the ground game so far.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with De Leon in particular looking to stall.
De Leon has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
De Leon wants to pass the guard but Baker is defending well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
De Leon performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Chris Baker has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Marvin De Leon has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
De Leon misses with a wild body shot.
Baker slips a straight right by De Leon.
Baker misses with a double jab
and De Leon counters with a left and a right that stings Baker.
Baker misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Baker takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Baker shoots in and drives through. De Leon sprawls well.
De Leon lands a jab to Baker's midsection.
De Leon scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
De Leon throws a combination. Baker tries to block but a couple of punches get through.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Marvin De Leon.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for De Leon, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
