PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Winky Hopper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and AJ Robles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). AJ Robles will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Winky Hopper!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, AJ Robles!
The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Robles shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Robles drops an elbow to the side of Hopper's head.

Hopper actively working from the bottom here.

Hopper is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Robles pulls his head out easily.
Hopper is not content to let Robles control the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Robles wants to pass to mount but Hopper is defending the position.

Robles throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Hopper is breathing heavily.

Robles is working for a submission of some sort.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Robles is trying to control. Hopper wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Hopper shoots and misses

so Robles counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Robles wants to stand but Hopper has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Robles throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Hopper works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hopper keeping full guard, as Robles tries to pass.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Hopper is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Robles defends well.
Hopper has a closed guard, preventing Robles from standing up.
Robles really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hopper. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Robles landing with the ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Hopper shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Robles counters with a three punch combo that has Hopper backing up. Hopper nods at Robles to acknowledge the strikes.

Robles clinches with his opponent.

Robles's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Robles gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Robles decides to pull guard.
Hopper trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Hopper stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Robles swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hopper loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Hopper postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Robles is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Hopper, into his guard.
Robles works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Robles tries to pass the half guard into mount. Hopper knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Robles is just content to waste time from the top position. Hopper takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Robles gets to his feet - Hopper follows without any prompting.
Robles shoots in for a takedown but Hopper shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Hopper is in the full mount, landing strikes.

Hopper is landing with some decent strikes but Robles is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Hopper lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
BOOM! Hopper connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Hopper scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Hopper lands with some strikes.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Robles takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Hopper pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Hopper lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Robles hang on?
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Hopper cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Robles wants to control but Hopper is having none of it.
Robles takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Hopper lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Robles working to try and regain half guard.
Robles tries to hold on but Hopper postures up.
BOOM! Hopper connects with a massive shot to the dome!

Robles swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.

Hopper is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Robles can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Hopper lands a heavy elbow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Winky Hopper will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Hopper drives through with a takedown into guard.
Hopper throws and elbow that misses. Robles uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Hopper's guard. Nice move by Robles!
Robles works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Robles trying to control the action but Hopper is working from the bottom.

Robles seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Robles is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Hopper defends it well.
Robles seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hopper does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Robles drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Hopper manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Robles has Hopper in his guard.

Hopper has gone for a leg lock! Robles slips out almost immediately though and dives into Hopper's guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Hopper accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

And that's the end of the fight!
Winky Hopper showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Hopper has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
