Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rafael Correia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rafael Mello (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Correia kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Cidadão Instigado - Os urubus só pensam em te comer. Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rafael Correia! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rafael Mello! The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Felipe Paraventi and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Correia fails in his attempt to clinch. Correia looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this! Mello lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head. Mello shoots in for a double leg but Correia sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Correia has closed the distance and engaged Mello in a clinch.
Mello tries for a takedown but Correia manages to get underhooks.
Mello pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage. Correia tries for a takedown. No joy.
Mello is trying to drag Correia to the mat but Correia just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. Rafael Correia has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rafael Mello. Mello goes for a takedown in the clinch but Correia prevents it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mello tries to stall but Correia uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Correia lands a right hand that snaps the head of Mello backwards. Mello pushes off an throws an elbow but Correia leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage. Correia lands with a left to the head. Mello is pushing Correia up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word. Correia stalling in the clinch.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Correia lands a nice uppercut. Correia just leaning against Mello, taking a breather. Correia lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Mello. Mello wants to get back to striking at distance but Correia won't allow it.
Correia prevents the takedown attempt.
Mello can't get the takedown.
Mello throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Correia blocks it with crossed arms.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mello has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate. Stalling in the clinch from Correia.
Mello using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Correia has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Mello has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Correia avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch. Correia stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body. Correia blocks an elbow strike from Mello.
Correia has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Mello clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Correia trying to control. So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
Correia is trying to stick to Mello's back but Mello is turning into Correia. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Correia's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Mello. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Correia keeping moving, preventing Mello from controlling successfully. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Rafael Correia dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Mello closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Correia did well to prevent Mello getting side control. Mello passes to side control. Mello has hold of Correia's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Correia tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Mello cranks the arm and Correia screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Correia, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:38 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Rafael Mello!
