PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Soloman Payne (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Godbey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Payne comes to the cage accompanied by "Du Hast" - Rammstein. The crowd seem to be enjoying Godbey's choice of entrance music: Back in Black. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Godbey!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Gwen Towbar and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Godbey lands with a kick to the temple. Payne shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Payne is looking to land body kicks.
Payne looks to land a left hand but Godbey moved out of range nicely.
Payne fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Payne connects with a solid leg kick.
Godbey misses with a double jab.
Godbey uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Payne.

Godbey moves into the clinch successfully.

Payne breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Payne misses with a jab, cross combination.
Payne closes the distance but Godbey moves to the side

and Godbey holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Godbey breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
No joy there for Payne, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Godbey scores with a head kick.
Payne looks to clinch
and Godbey counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Payne misses with a takedown attempt

and Godbey counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Godbey.

Godbey is looking to break free of the clinch but Payne has double underhooks.

Payne manages to break the clinch.

Godbey clinches up with Payne and pushes him back against the cage.
Godbey goes for a takedown in the clinch but Payne prevents it.

and Godbey counters with a nice double leg into side control. Payne won't be happy with that.
Godbey slows the pace down.
Payne tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Payne is breathing heavily.

You can see the frustration on Payne's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Payne tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
Godbey looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Payne knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Godbey on the ground.
Godbey tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Payne is in a horrible position here. Godbey smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

Payne is trying to stand back up but Godbey is controlling him

Let's hope that Godbey has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Godbey thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Payne looking for a sweep but Godbey has passed into full mount! Oh no!

Payne tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Godbey cracks Payne with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Payne is trying desperately to improve position.
Payne is squirming around, avoiding Godbey's attempts to control the action.
Godbey content just to control the position here.
Payne squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Godbey dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Payne closes the distance looking to clinch

and Godbey counters by moving into the clinch.
Payne lands an uppercut.

Payne escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Payne misses with a series of wild punches.

Payne pushes Godbey up against the cage in a clinch.

Payne turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Payne manages to end up in side control.
Godbey wants to control but Payne postures up.
Godbey tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Payne wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Payne tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Godbey is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Payne off and has taken his back!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

A bit of a pause in the action here. Godbey controlling the positon.
Payne takes a big shot to the side of the head.

Payne looking very determined here, making life difficult for Godbey.
Payne is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Godbey lands a shot to the head.
Payne wants to escape the position but for the time being he's just trying to control the pace.
Payne can't escape the position.
Godbey is riding his opponent, not letting Payne buck him off.
I really don't envy Payne right now.

Godbey is trying to stick to Payne's back but Payne is turning into Godbey. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Godbey's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Payne.

Payne gets to his feet. Godbey looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Payne shoots and misses

and Godbey counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Payne!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Godbey landing strikes from the mount and Payne is in trouble!
Payne is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
Godbey with shots to the head and body - Payne looks very uncomfortable down there.

John Godbey showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Payne's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Payne chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Godbey can pounce on him.

Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Payne has had enough of the clinch but Godbey keeps him there for the moment.
Godbey is pressed up against the cage. Payne has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Godbey down to the mat. Godbey avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Godbey throws a series of punches but Payne moves out of range.
Godbey throws the left hand but Payne avoids the punch easily.
Payne lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Godbey at a distance.
Godbey fails with an attempt to clinch.
Godbey feints and then cracks Payne's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Payne down.

and Godbey counters by clinching up.
Payne goes for a takedown attempt but Godbey pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Soloman Payne. That's going to take a lot out of him.

John Godbey comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Godbey has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
