PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gerard Gory (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Aleksander Emelianenko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Emelianenko has chosen Soviet March as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Aleksander Emelianenko is staring across the ring at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Gerard Gory!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Aleksander Emelianenko!
The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Ivan Kurochkin and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Emelianenko tries to keep at a distance but Gory has taken the fight into the clinch.

Emelianenko manages to pull guard.
Gory trying to control but Emelianenko is working from the bottom.
Emelianenko seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Emelianenko wants to sweep here but Gory controlling him for the moment.
Emelianenko really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gory. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Emelianenko controls Gory momentarily but Gory frees himself.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Emelianenko can do anything to dispel that myth.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Gerard Gory just wasn't active enough.

Emelianenko moves into the clinch.

Emelianenko breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Gory lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Emelianenko at a distance.
Gory throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Emelianenko stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Gory throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Gory works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Emelianenko moves out of range as Gory strikes.
Gory tries to clinch up but Emelianenko circles away and keeps his distance.

and Emelianenko counters with a single leg into guard. Gory didn't expect that.

Emelianenko wants to stand and escape but instead Gory has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Gory stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Emelianenko swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Gory not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Gory wants to control from the top but Emelianenko keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Aleksander Emelianenko was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Gory keeps the fight on the outside.
Gory throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Emelianenko on the side of the head.
Gory fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Emelianenko on the side of the head.
Gory gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Emelianenko counters with a one-two to the body.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Emelianenko shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Gory is trying to defend but Emelianenko finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Emelianenko seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Gory trying to control from the bottom.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Gory looking for submissions off his back.
Emelianenko wants to stand but Gory has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Gory is looking for a sweep. Emelianenko is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Gory is staying active underneath Emelianenko, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Gory wants to control but Emelianenko is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Gory manages to get to full guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Gory throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Emelianenko must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Emelianenko thows a big elbow that misses.
Gory has a closed guard, preventing Emelianenko from standing up.
Emelianenko is looking to work some ground and pound but Gory has wrist control.
Emelianenko stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gory swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Emelianenko. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Aleksander Emelianenko hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Gory throws a hook to the side of Emelianenko's head but Emelianenko sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Gory scores with a one two! Emelianenko had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Gory misses with the head strike.
A body shot lands from Emelianenko.

Emelianenko is working on a single leg takedown against the ropes. Gory can't fight it off and eventually Emelianenko manages to take the fight to the floor. Gory looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Emelianenko has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Gory is proving hard to escape from.
Emelianenko stays in close to Gory's body and controls the position.
Aleksander Emelianenko has got the better of the ground game so far.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Emelianenko drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Emelianenko jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



Emelianenko shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Emelianenko throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Gory is trying to get back to full guard.
Emelianenko is keen to just control but Gory is a slippery customer.
Emelianenko is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Gory is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Emelianenko pulls his head out easily.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Aleksander Emelianenko wasn't active enough on the ground.

Emelianenko feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Gory looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Emelianenko is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gory is on top in guard.
Emelianenko looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Gory puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Emelianenko has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gory is working away from the top position though.

Emelianenko wants to get back to his feet but Gory drags him back down.

Gory trying to control from half guard but Emelianenko is working away.
Gory has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Emelianenko tries to reverse the position but Gory maintains control.
Gory can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Emelianenko is looking to escape.
Emelianenko tries to hold on but Gory pushes him away.

And that's the end of the fight!
Aleksander Emelianenko comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Emelianenko has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
