PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Kidd Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jesse Pinsent (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pinsent is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by The Pot - Tool. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Kidd Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jesse Pinsent!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Felipe Paraventi and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pinsent tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Smith paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Horrible takedown by Pinsent or perhaps it was just good defense by Smith which made him look bad.

Smith drives through and clinches with Pinsent against the cage.
Still in the clinch, Smith scores with a nice short uppercut.
Pinsent stops a takedown attempt from Smith.
Smith wants a takedown but no success here.

Smith breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Pinsent scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Smith tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Smith knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Pinsent on the ground.
Pinsent scores with punches from side control.
Pinsent has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Pinsent is looking to take a break and control but Smith is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Pinsent sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Smith is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Pinsent wants to control but Smith is keeping him busy.
Smith can't do much from the bottom here.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Pinsent closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Pinsent lands in his opponent's guard.

Smith takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Smith takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Smith is looking to reverse the position.
Pinsent tries to move to mount but Smith blocks the move with his legs.
Pinsent is looking to take a break and control but Smith is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Pinsent advances to mount.
Smith is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Pinsent trying to control but Smith is having none of it.

Smith wants to hold on but Pinsent pushes him away.
Smith tries to control the position but Pinsent now has his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smith rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

Pinsent is working for a submission of some sort.

Pinsent is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Pinsent throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Smith tries to get to full guard but Pinsent has control of the leg.
Pinsent sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Pinsent is keen to just control but Smith is a slippery customer.
Pinsent passes the guard and advances to mount!
Pinsent wants to control the pace but Smith is squirming around nicely.

Pinsent is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Smith can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Smith fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Pinsent shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Smith counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Smith misses with a jab, cross combination.
Pinsent is looking to clinch.
Smith doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Pinsent counters with a nice double leg into side control. Smith won't be happy with that.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Smith is not content to let Pinsent control the position.
Smith tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Smith avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Pinsent.
Smith gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Smith prevents Pinsent from taking his back.
Pinsent tries to push Smith's head away but Smith is holding on tight.
Smith is trying to get back to his feet but can't.
Pinsent working the ground and pound effectively.
Smith is working to get back to half guard.
Smith throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.
Smith doing his best to control the position. Can he escape?

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Smith swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Smith is desperately trying to improve his position but Pinsent has a good base and remains in mount.
Pinsent wants to control the pace but Smith is squirming around nicely.
Pinsent prevents Smith from getting the reversal.
Pinsent content just to control the position here.

Pinsent has hold of Smith's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Smith manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Pinsent trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Pinsent looking to finish Smith with some ground and pound. This is bad for Smith!

Pinsent avoids the attempt from Smith to control.
Pinsent moves to the back position.
Smith tries to escape the position.
Pinsent trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.
Smith is trying to break free.
Smith wants to control his opponent's hands but Pinsent gets his hands free.
Jesse Pinsent has got the better of the ground game so far.

Pinsent looking to break Smith's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Smith remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Pinsent will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

Pinsent working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
Pinsent somehow managing to miss with a strike from the back.
Pinsent not allowing Smith to control his hands.
Pinsent is hanging on to Smith's back as he tries to escape.
Pinsent lands a punch that was close to the back of the head but the ref thinks it's OK.
Pinsent biding his time, looking for the opening.

Pinsent tightening his grip on Smith, looking for the choke.

Pinsent is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.

Jesse Pinsent showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Smith throws a left and a right that both miss

and Pinsent counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Smith!

Pinsent throws some shoulder strikes here and then postures up. Oh, he's gone for an armbar! Smith has his hands clasped together but Pinsent breaks the hold and Smith is forced to tap! This one is aaaaaaaaaaall over! That was lightning fast by Pinsent!
