PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Carter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tommy Gunn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Carter might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Turn the lights out. The key to victory for John Carter has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John Carter!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Tommy Gunn!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Damien Edna and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carter throws a series of punches but Gunn moves out of range.
Carter throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Carter tries to clinch there but Gunn circles away.
Carter punishes Gunn's body with a nice straight punch.

Gunn gets a clinch.

Gunn gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Carter looking to hit a scissor sweep but Gunn is one step ahead there.
Gunn being controlled here momentarily.

Gunn is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Carter escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Gunn gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gunn stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Carter swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Carter is trying to control the position but Gunn postures up.
Carter lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Gunn!
A nice elbow there by Carter.
Carter unloads with some shots from mount but Gunn bucks and avoids them well.
Carter thowing shots but they're missing.
Carter tries to control but Gunn wriggling away.
Gunn sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Gunn looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Gunn is looking to improve his position.
Carter seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Gunn does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Gunn is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Carter pulls his head out easily.
Gunn looks gassed!

Carter seems to be looking for submissions.
Carter is nestled in close to Gunn, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Carter thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gunn is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Carter trying to control from half guard but Gunn is working away.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gunn misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Gunn trying to get back to full guard but Carter takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount!
Gunn tries to reverse the position but Carter maintains control.
Carter cracks Gunn with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Gunn throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.
Gunn is in a horrible position here. Carter smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gunn tries to reverse the position but Carter maintains control.
Carter lands a big shot there that rocks Gunn but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Carter wants to control the pace but Gunn is squirming around nicely.
Carter throwing strikes here but Gunn is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Carter controlling the pace for now.
Carter pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Carter wants to finish this one by submission but Gunn is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Carter.
Gunn bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Carter dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Carter tries to clinch but Gunn moves away

and Gunn counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Gunn wants to stand up but Carter has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Carter trying to control but Gunn postures up.
Gunn seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Carter does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Carter is trying to get back to full guard.
Gunn trying to control the action but Carter is working from the bottom.
Gunn is breathing heavily.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Gunn prevents Carter from improving his position.
Carter has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Carter is working hard here to advance position.

Gunn moves into full mount! Carter won't be happy about that!
Carter is desperately trying to improve his position but Gunn has a good base and remains in mount.
Gunn wants to control the pace but Carter is squirming around nicely.

Gunn is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Carter has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Carter tries to lock up and control but Gunn gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Carter can't escape the position.
Gunn trying to control but Carter is having none of it.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Carter is trying desperately to improve position.
Carter is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Carter really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Gunn trying to control but Carter is having none of it.
Carter avoids a strike by Gunn and manages to complete a very nice reversal in the process, to end up in Gunn's guard! Fantastic escape!

Gunn is looking for a triangle but Carter pushes his legs off easily.
Carter controls from within his opponent's guard.
Carter trying to control but Gunn is working from the bottom.

Carter stands up and waves to Gunn to follow him.
Carter darts in trying to clinch

and Gunn counters with a nice double leg into side control. Carter won't be happy with that.

Gunn wants to lay and pray for a moment but Carter keeps working.

Gunn is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Carter knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Carter can't do much from the bottom here.
Carter is looking to regain half guard here but Gunn keeps moving and retains side control.
Carter is trying to control Gunn's posture but Gunn avoids it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tommy Gunn showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Carter looks to clinch

so Gunn counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Gunn trying to control the position from guard on top but Carter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Carter trying to keep a closed guard but Gunn is proving a slippery customer.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Carter is on top in guard.

Gunn has his foot on Carter's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Carter works his way back into a safe position though.
Gunn can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Carter controls the pace.

Carter got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gunn has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Carter has managed to get both his arms back between Gunn's legs - danger averted.
Gunn takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Gunn had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Carter defends it easily.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Carter accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Carter trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Gunn is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Carter is aware though and is defending well.
Gunn throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Gunn keeping moving, preventing Carter from controlling successfully.
Carter would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Carter postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Carter sitting in guard, not really doing much.

Gunn has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Carter can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Carter wanted to stand there but Gunn had control of the position.

Carter throws a big right hand that misses.

Gunn throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Carter seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Tommy Gunn comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Gunn has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
