Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Canelo Jhonson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Leslie Morrow! The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Cecil Peabody and Tiny Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! The fight moves into the clinch position. Morrow manages to break the clinch.
Morrow tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Jhonson bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Jhonson decides to take the fight back to the feet. Jhonson really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Jhonson shoots in and bounces Morrow off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Morrow is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Jhonson is controlling him. Jhonson pushing down on Morrow's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Jhonson thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Jhonson stands up from half guard. Morrow misses with an uppercut. Jhonson saw that one coming. Jhonson wants to clinch up but Morrow keeps it at a distance. Canelo Jhonson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Morrow throws a body kick that misses.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jhonson looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Morrow takes a swing at Jhonson's ribcage but misses. Jhonson slips a straight right by Morrow. Jhonson throws a series of strikes that have Morrow backpedaling.
Morrow is looking to chop away at Jhonson's legs. Jhonson tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him. Morrow fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Jhonson, pushing him back against the cage. Jhonson wants to get back to striking at distance but Morrow won't allow it.
Jhonson is pressed up against the cage. Morrow has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Jhonson down to the mat. Jhonson avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. Jhonson lands with a straight right. Morrow didn't see that one coming. Jhonson closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Morrow fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Morrow throws a knee to the head but misses.
Morrow looks gassed! Jhonson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Morrow will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Jhonson tries to close the distance and clinch but Morrow swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Morrow forces Jhonson back against the cage and clinches. Jhonson wants a takedown.
Jhonson tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Morrow just stands there and leans against the cage. Jhonson wants to get back to striking at distance but Morrow won't allow it.
Jhonson fails to pull the fight into his guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Canelo Jhonson. That's going to take a lot out of him. Morrow throws a knee to the head but misses.
Jhonson is trying to break the clinch but Morrow has him pressed against the cage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Morrow keeps control of Jhonson as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. Morrow breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Jhonson lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin. Some wild striking there from Jhonson.
Jhonson misses with the combination.
Jhonson gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Jhonson is trying to break free. Morrow pulls guard successfully.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Morrow can do anything to dispel that myth. Jhonson wanted to stand there but Morrow had control of the position. Morrow should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Morrow trying to keep a closed guard but Jhonson is proving a slippery customer.
Jhonsonis looking to pass into half guard but Morrow pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Morrow is in guard. Jhonson bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Morrow's guard. Jhonson stands up from guard. Let's bang! Jhonson closes this distance looking for a takedown but Morrow circles away. Morrow looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Jhonson closes the distance and lands a one-two. Morrow scores with a slapping inside leg kick. Morrow shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Morrow really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jhonson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Jhonson is looking to improve his position.
Jhonson slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Jhonson wants to stand up but Morrow is controlling him. Jhonson has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Morrow is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Jhonson. Morrow decides to take the fight back to the feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Morrow fails with a takedown attempt. Morrow bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Morrow wants to control but Jhonson is keeping him busy. Morrow scoring with punches from side control. Jhonson is looking for a sweep. Morrow decides to stand back up. Morrow steps back and let's Jhonson get back to his feet. Morrow doesn't succeed with the takedown and Jhonson counters with a lovely shot to the body. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Jhonson tries to clinch but Morrow moves away and Morrow counters with a shoot takedown. Jhonson fights it but they end up in guard. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Jhonson is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Morrow rolls with it to try and escape but Jhonson cranks on the arm and Morrow is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
