Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, John Matua! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Hanamichi Sakuragi! The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Anni Minnemäki and Roosa Järviläinen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sakuragi takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Matua really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Sakuragi shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Matua sprawls well. Matua wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Sakuragi gets slowly back to his feet. Matua misses with a jab, cross combination.

It looks like Hanamichi Sakuragi has been cut. Sakuragi shoots in looking for a takedown. Matua tries to sprawl out of it but Sakuragi keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Matua manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Sakuragi misses with a takedown attempt - Matua sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. John Matua has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Hanamichi Sakuragi. Sakuragi fails with a takedown attempt. Sakuragi shoots in but Matua avoids the takedown attempt easily. Sakuragi misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Matua connects with a high kick. Matua displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Sakuragi. Matua misses with a leg kick. Matua throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.

That's one minute gone in the round. Sakuragi shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Matua but Matua pushes him off and we're back to square one. Matua plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Sakuragi is rocked! Matua throws a head kick that misses. Sakuragi is still on wobbly legs! Can Matua finish him? Matua misses with a series of wild punches.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Matua. Sakuragi shrugs it off though. Sakuragi seems to have recovered his senses. Sakuragi looks gassed! Matua throws a series of punches but Sakuragi moves out of range. Sakuragi avoids a punch combination nicely.
Sakuragi looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Matua is fending him off so far but Sakuragi persists. Nope, Matua circles away and we're back to standing. Matua keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.

Matua lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

John Matua is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Matua throws a body kick that digs right into the meat. Matua misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Hanamichi Sakuragi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Sakuragi fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Matua feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Sakuragi's calf.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sakuragi misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Sakuragi shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Matua's guard. Sakuragi tries to free his leg and advance position but Matua is retaining full guard. Matua uses the cage to get back to his feet.

Matua cracks Sakuragi with an open hand slap. Sakuragi shoots in for a takedown but Matua shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Matua rushes Sakuragi and presses him up against the cage. Matua breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Sakuragi shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Matua manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Sakuragi stops Matua from standing up. Matua trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sakuragi is pushing down on Matua's leg trying to pass to half guard. Matua is fighting to maintain full guard but Sakuragi has managed to sneak the leg through. Sakuragi passes to side control. Sakuragi tries to advance to mount but Matua denies him. Sakuragi is trying to get an arm triangle but Matua is defending well. Matua wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done! The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Matua prevents Sakuragi from moving into mount.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Matua tries to escape but Sakuragi is in control. Sakuragi works to advance to full mount. Matua defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs. Sakuragi moves to the back. Sakuragi is cranking Matua's head sideways - that looks painful. He's managed to get his other arm under the chin and this looks bad for Matua! He's tightened the choke and Matua is tapping out!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:38 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Hanamichi Sakuragi!
