PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tsubasa Hongo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kyle Kingston (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kingston has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Tsubasa Hongo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kyle Kingston!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Sosuke Kotani and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kingston throws a right hand that Hongo ducks under and follows up with a left that Hongo also avoids with ease.
Kingston looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Hongo shoots in for a takedown but Kingston shows good takedown defense.

Kingston gets caught flat footed, as Hongo shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Hongo advances position into side control!
The ground and pound from Hongo seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Kingston really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hongo. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Hongo wants to control but Kingston is keeping him busy.
Hongo has knee on belly and moves into mount.

Hongo content just to control the position here.
Hongo is in the full mount, landing strikes.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Hongo looking to ground and pound but Kingston is blocking nicely.
Hongo takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Hongo thowing shots but they're missing.
A nice elbow there by Hongo.

Hongo looking for a guillotine from mount but Kingston is having none of it.
Hongo with the ground and pound from mount.
Hongo tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Hongo's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Hongo with shots to the head and body - Kingston looks very uncomfortable down there.
Kingston blocking the ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hongo tries to clinch there but Kingston circles away.
Some wild striking there from Hongo.
Hongo tries to close the distance and clinch up but Kingston swats him away and circles back towards the center.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hongo is defended easily by Kingston.
Hongo throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Kingston.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hongo looks for a takedown but Kingston sprawls well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Hongo looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Hongo trying to control but Kingston is working from the bottom.

Hongo gets to his feet - Kingston follows without any prompting.
A combination from Hongo does no damage.
Hongo dodges the punch combination from Kingston.
Kingston will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Hongo fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tsubasa Hongo. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Hongo has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Kingston stuffs the takedown attempt from Hongo. Hongo gets slowly back to his feet.
Hongo shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Kingston falls off balance throwing a combination

and Hongo counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Kingston's guard now.
Hongo slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hongo wants to control from the top but Kingston keeps moving.

Hongo decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Kingston throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Hongo counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Kingston!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tsubasa Hongo dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Hongo throws an overhand right that lands on Kingston's shoulder, as Kingston tries to avoid the shot.
Hongo doesn't manage to clinch there - Kingston circles away.

Hongo gets the takedown into side control.
Hongo in side control, throwing shots but Kingston defends.

Hongo stands up and beckons Kingston to his feet.
Kingston looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kingston tries a head kick but it misses.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hongo wants to clinch up but Kingston keeps it at a distance.
No joy there for Kingston, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Kingston leaves Hongo with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Kingston throws a leg kick that is checked

and Hongo counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Hongo.

Hongo manages to break the clinch.
Hongo looks for a takedown but Kingston sprawls well.
Kingston defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Hongo.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tsubasa Hongo. That's going to take a lot out of him.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Hongo shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Kingston but Kingston pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Hongo gets the takedown into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hongo is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Kingston knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Hongo happy to just control the position for now.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hongo throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Hongo controlling from side mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Hongo is trying to get an arm triangle but Kingston is defending well.
Kingston is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Tsubasa Hongo showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Hongo, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
