PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Rauta Vaara (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Aruki Masura (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the fighters buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Rauta Vaara!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Aruki Masura!
The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Arvi Lind and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vaara fails with a takedown attempt.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Vaara crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Masura - the referee stops the clock and Vaara gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Masura. Vaara manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
Vaara tries to score a power double leg takedown but Masura sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Vaara somewhat.
Masura throws a right and a left that both miss.

Masura closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Masura takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Masura is working for an americana but Vaara has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Masura was thinking about the submission.
Masura passes Vaara's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Vaara avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Masura.

Vaara wants to improve his position but Masura is controlling well.

Masura is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Vaara sees it coming and defends easily.
Masura tries to pass the half guard into mount. Vaara knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Masura is pressing down on Vaara's thigh, looking to free his foot. Vaara is holding on for now.

Masura seems to be working for a kimura but Vaara defends the submission attempt.
Vaara makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Vaara.
Vaara is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Masura drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Masura jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Vaara wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Rauta Vaara has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Vaara avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Vaara misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

and Masura counters by clinching up.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rauta Vaara. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Masura pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

and Masura counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Masura.

Masura engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Masura controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Masura drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Vaara manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Masura has Vaara in his guard.
Masura keeping moving, preventing Vaara from controlling successfully.
Masura utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Vaara misses with a takedown
and Masura counters with a low kick, right behind Vaara 's knee.
Nice takedown defense from Vaara. No joy for Masura on that attempt.
Vaara keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Masura shoots in looking for a takedown but Vaara manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Masura's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

and Masura counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Vaara!
Masura wants to control the pace but Vaara is squirming around nicely.
Vaara tries to lock up and control but Masura gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Vaara pushes Masura off looking to stand but Masura dives back in and keeps control.
Vaara is staying active underneath Masura, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Vaara wants to improve his position but Masura is controlling well.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Masura throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Vaara wants to sweep but Masura has passed to side control!

Masura tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Masura has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Masura thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Vaara is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Masura is looking to advance position but Vaara won't allow it.
Vaara tries to roll over but Masura keeps him under control.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Masura is keen to just control but Vaara is a slippery customer.

Masura is looking for a kimura here.
Masura thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Vaara trying to hold on to Masura's head to control him but Masura postures up.
Vaara is trying to stand up here but Masura is controlling him well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Aruki Masura showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Masura fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Vaara manages to avoid it.
Vaara tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Vaara wants to clinch up but Masura keeps it at a distance.

Vaara has managed to clinch.

Vaara manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Masura slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Vaara has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Masura can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Vaara wants to get back to his feet but Masura passes into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Masura wants to pass to mount but Vaara is defending the position.

Vaara is staying active underneath Masura, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Masura is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Vaara has managed to free his arm - good work.
Masura is looking to take a break and control but Vaara is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Masura works his foot free and advances to mount.
Vaara is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Masura wants to control the pace but Vaara is squirming around nicely.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Masura controlling the position easily from mount.
Masura looking to control but Vaara is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Masura wants to finish this one by submission but Vaara is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Masura.
Masura avoids the attempt from Vaara to control.
Aruki Masura is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Masura pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Rauta Vaara has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Aruki Masura comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Masura has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
