The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Van de Nieuwenheijzen shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Van de Nieuwenheijzen showed some decent athleticism there.
Van de Nieuwenheijzen tries to pass to full mount but Pelham defends it.
Pelham moves into full guard.
Van de Nieuwenheijzen is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Pelham working for a triangle but Van de Nieuwenheijzen defends it easily.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and Van de Nieuwenheijzen counters with a nice double leg into side control. Pelham won't be happy with that.

Van de Nieuwenheijzen tries for a kimura but Pelham is defending well.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Pelham is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Van de Nieuwenheijzen off and has taken his back!

Pelham is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Van de Nieuwenheijzen defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

Pelham goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Van de Nieuwenheijzen turns into him and now he's in Pelham's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Van de Nieuwenheijzen knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Pelham on the ground.

Pelham has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Van de Nieuwenheijzen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Pelham is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Pelham has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Van de Nieuwenheijzen tries to hold on but Pelham pushes him away.

Pelham looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.

Pelham is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Van de Nieuwenheijzen is surviving well by controlling Pelham's body position as best he can.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Pelham wants to finish this one by submission but Van de Nieuwenheijzen is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Pelham.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
