Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Kirk!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, BJ Penn!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Robert Twigg and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kirk closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
BJ Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Penn lands with an overhand left.
Penn throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Kirk throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Penn's waist but Penn gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kirk off to one side.
Kirk really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Penn misses with a body shot.
Penn misses with a straight left.
Penn thows a body shot but no joy.
A big left from Penn misses.
Kirk shoots in for a takedown but Penn shows good takedown defense.
Kirk slips a straight right by Penn.
Penn pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Penn with a nice cross.
Kirk takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Penn takes a kick to the body and keeps moving.
A big left from Penn misses.
Penn connects with a looping right hand.
Penn misses with a looping left.
Penn throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Kirk scores with a sloppy right hand. Penn should have avoided that one.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Penn fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Kirk looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Penn misses with a straight left.
Kirk shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Penn's guard.
Penn is trying to control the position but Kirk postures up.
Penn tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Penn keeping moving, preventing Kirk from controlling successfully.
Kirk slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Penn tries to strike from the bottom.
James Kirk has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Kirk tries a head kick but it misses.
A telegraphed right hand from Penn misses the target.
Kirk tries to score a power double leg takedown but Penn sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kirk somewhat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James Kirk. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's two minutes gone in the round.
Penn jabs Kirk to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Penn swinging wildly here.
No luck for Kirk with that takedown attempt.
Penn checks a leg kick.
Penn is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Kirk.
Penn loads up on a big right hand but Kirk slips the punch.
Penn connects with a crisp jab.
Kirk fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Penn on the side of the head.
A big right from Penn misses.
Penn displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Kirk.
Penn throws a body punch but Kirk moves out of range.
That's three minutes gone in the round.
Penn scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Penn keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Kirk is breathing heavily.
Penn connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Kirk on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Penn fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Penn lands a left and a right that send Kirk crashing to the mat, dazed. Penn thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!
Kirk is rocked!
It looks like James Kirk has been cut.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Penn moves in close and cracks Kirk with a massive right hand! Kirk, frozen momentarily in time, tumbles to the canvas, already out cold! A brutal knockout by Penn!
