Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Tom Tucker! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, PJ Penn! The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Tucker is looking to take this fight into the clinch. A momentary lapse in concentration from Tucker enables Penn to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Tucker manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Tucker is looking to stand up but Penn isn't so interested in that idea. Penn slips nicely into half guard. Penn sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Tucker defending well though. Tucker blocking the ground and pound attempt from Penn. Penn not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Penn thows a big elbow that misses, also allowing Tucker to regain full guard. Penn pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Tucker is keeping the position for now. Tucker wants to stand but Penn is controlling the position. Tucker knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Penn on the ground. Penn pushes down on Tucker's leg and manages to get into half guard. Penn throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Penn has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
That's one minute gone in the round. Penn lands with a punch from half guard. Penn is keen to just control but Tucker is a slippery customer. Penn thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Penn is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Tucker has managed to free his arm - good work. Tucker is looking to escape. Tucker on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Tucker tries to get out of the position. Penn is trying to control. Tucker wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Penn scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Penn wants to pass the guard but Tucker is defending well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Penn is looking to take a break and control but Tucker is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Penn thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Tucker's head. Penn uses his free foot to push down on Tucker's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Tucker. Penn is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Tucker has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Tucker! Tucker wants to get up but he can't break Penn's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Penn will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Penn wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. Penn bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Tucker's guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn controlling from the top position. Penn stops Tucker from standing up. Tucker working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Penn. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Penn trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Tucker utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Penn is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Tucker is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Penn is controlling him. Penn in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Penn wants to control from the top but Tucker keeps moving. Penn wants to pass the guard but Tucker is keeping the position. Tucker wants to get back to his feet but Penn is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Penn trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Penn is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Penn postures up in Tucker's guard and throws a big left but Tucker blocks it. Penn throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Penn slips nicely into half guard. Penn looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Penn thows a body shot but no joy. Penn shoots in for a double leg but Tucker sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Tom Tucker is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Tucker misses with a body shot.
Penn swats away the attempt to clinch by Tucker. Tucker stuffs the takedown attempt from Penn. Penn gets slowly back to his feet. Penn lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Horrible takedown by Penn or perhaps it was just good defense by Tucker which made him look bad. Tom Tucker has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of PJ Penn. Penn fails with a takedown attempt from distance. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Tucker tries to close the distance and clinch but Penn swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Tucker scoring well with a low kick there.
Penn misses with a hook. Tucker fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Penn, pushing him back against the cage. Tucker missing with knees to the body.

Penn is trying to drag Tucker to the mat but Tucker just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. A knee to the head by Tucker.
Tucker is trying to wear down his opponent with knees to the body. Tucker unloads a knee to the mid-section. Penn lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh. Tucker creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Penn's defenses. Tucker lands an elbow just above Penn 's eye. Tucker connects with a knee to the head.

Penn goes for a takedown attempt but Tucker pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
A head kick misses from Tucker. Penn throws a body punch but Tucker moves out of range. Penn throws a combination. Tucker tries to block but a couple of punches get through. Tucker moves out of range of the body kick. Penn looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Penn avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Penn tries to control but Tucker wriggling away. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. You get the feeling that Tucker really doesn't like being in this position too much.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Penn is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Tucker can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Penn swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Tucker is now in Penn's guard. A big mistake from Penn there, giving up the dominant position! This has been an exciting period of action! Penn pulls Tucker in close to prevent any damage. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Penn works Tucker's body with a nice hook. Tucker tries to close the distance and clinch but Penn swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Tucker throws a lazy right hand but Penn sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Penn throws a body kick but he wasn't in range. Penn blocks a head kick by Tucker.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Tucker throws the left hand but Penn avoids the punch easily. Tucker is looking to clinch. Penn feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Tuckers jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist! Penn misses with a hook to the body
and Tucker counters with a head kick. That will keep Penn thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks! Tucker keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Penn jabs Tucker to the body, keeping him at a distance. Tucker tries to clinch up but Penn circles away and keeps his distance. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Penn. Tom Tucker has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of PJ Penn. Tucker moves in looking to clinch but Penn pushes him off. Penn throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Tucker's waist but Tucker gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Penn off to one side. Sloppy strikes from Penn. Those never looked like landing. Penn throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd. Penn keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.

Tucker tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Penn manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Penn closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Penn lands in his opponent's guard. The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Penn. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn tries to free his leg and advance position but Tucker is retaining full guard. Penn wants to control from the top but Tucker keeps moving. The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by PJ Penn. Tucker takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Tom Tucker is winning the standup battle so far.

Penn sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Tucker's guard. Penn stalling away here and it's allowed Tucker to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard. Penn is stalling in the full guard. It's got to the stage where if one of these guys blows hard enough, the other might fall over. Penn throwing strikes but missing.

Penn is in close to Tucker's body, working some short punches and elbows. Penn passes Tucker's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Tucker is not content to let Penn control the position. Tucker pushes Penn off looking to stand but Penn dives back in and keeps control.
