PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Baby Jay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Victor Darwin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Darwin is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by You're Going Down - Sick Puppies. Victor Darwin told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
8 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Baby Jay! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Victor Darwin! The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Winston Howard and Donatello Bradman.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jay staying out of range there. Darwin throws a big shot that misses. Darwin misses with a body shot.
Darwin misses with a looping right. Darwin pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Darwin swings for the body but Jay moves out of range.
Jay misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Darwin.
Darwin throws a jab when Jay was well out of range. Darwin is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Jay. A shot to the body from Darwin misses and Jay counters with a nice double leg into side control. Darwin won't be happy with that. Darwin is looking to regain half guard here but Jay keeps moving and retains side control. Darwin really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jay. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Jay content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though. Jay landing a few strikes.
It looks like Victor Darwin has been cut. Jay in side control, just content to control the action for now.

Darwin might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Jay kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Jay thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Jay will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Jay tries to move into full mount but can't pass Darwin's legs. Jay grinds an elbow into Darwin's temple. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Darwin is trying to get back to half guard. Jay throwing strikes but Darwin manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Darwin tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. Jay gets back to half guard. Jay is looking to improve his position.
Darwin throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Jay wants to improve his position but Darwin is controlling well.

Jay wants to sweep here but Darwin controlling him for the moment. Darwin wants to stand but Jay is controlling his posture from full guard.

Darwin postures up in Jay's guard and throws a big left but Jay blocks it. Darwin working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Jay looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Darwin trying to control the position from guard on top but Jay is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Darwin trying to move into half guard but instead Jay has managed to sweep! Jay seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Darwin keeping moving, preventing Jay from controlling successfully. Jay tries to free his leg and advance position but Darwin is retaining full guard.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Jay lands a jab. Jay slips a straight right by Darwin. Darwin takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it. Darwin misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Jay counters with a nice double leg into guard. Jay trying to control but Darwin is working from the bottom. Jay pushes down on Darwin's leg and manages to get into half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Darwin throws a right hand that Jay ducks under and follows up with a left that Jay also avoids with ease. The fighters circling - Darwin throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Darwin looks to land a left hand but Jay moved out of range nicely. Darwin is breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jay fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Darwin looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath. Jay is looking to wear down Darwin with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment. Darwin is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Jay. Darwin throws a left and a right that both miss

and Jay counters with a straight punch to the midsection. Darwin is really struggling to land any decent head shots against his taller opponent. Jay with a body punch. A glancing blow. Victor Darwin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A shot to the body from Darwin misses and Jay counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Darwin throws a predictable looking body shot
and Darwin takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Jay connects with a good right hand that stumbles Darwin. Darwin circles away out of range and recomposes himself. Darwin looks to land a left hand but Jay moved out of range nicely. Jay keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Darwin. Jay scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent. Darwin throws an overhand right that lands on Jay's shoulder, as Jay tries to avoid the shot. Jay scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business. Jay lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin. Jay works Darwin's body with a nice hook. Jay is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Jay looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Jay scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Jay scoring with some ground and pound. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Jay seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Darwin has his foot on Jay's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Jay works his way back into a safe position though. Baby Jay overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Darwin being controlled here, momentarily. Jay postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Jay is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Darwin looking to hit a scissor sweep but Jay is one step ahead there. Darwin controls Jay momentarily but Jay frees himself. Jay wants to control from the top but Darwin keeps moving. Jay content to stall in guard here. Jay loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Darwin wants to stand and escape but Jay is having none of it. Jay with a nice head shot there. Jay working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Jay has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Jay content to stall in guard here. Darwin keeping moving, preventing Jay from controlling successfully. and Jay counters with a lovely shot to the body. Jay moves away from the strike by Darwin. Jay lands a nice hook to Darwin's body. Darwin takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes. Jay ducks under a wild hook from Darwin. Jay steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Darwin. Darwin misses the body punch and Jay counters with a left to the body. Jay cracks a nice hook into Darwin's ribs. Jay connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Darwin takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Jay keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Darwin. Darwin loads up on a big right hand but Jay slips the punch.

so Jay counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Jay content to stall in guard here. Jay trying to control the position from guard on top but Darwin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Darwin has momentary wrist control but Jay slips an elbow through the middle. Darwin isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Jay stacks Darwin on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Jay!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Darwin is trying to get back to half guard. Check out the look on Jay's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

Jay is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Darwin can do to turn this around? Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Jay in particular looking to stall. Jay in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Darwin tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Jay!
