PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Edward Newgate (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Captain Beefheart (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Beefheart has chosen Yellow Snow as his entrance music. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Edward Newgate!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Captain Beefheart!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Chris Downing and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Newgate shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Beefheart defends it nicely.

Beefheart clinches up with Newgate and pushes him back against the cage.

Beefheart manages to break the clinch.
Beefheart fails in his attempt to clinch.
Newgate throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Beefheart's waist but Beefheart gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Newgate off to one side.

Newgate tries to keep at a distance but Beefheart has taken the fight into the clinch.
Beefheart throws a knee to the head but misses.

Beefheart pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Newgate shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Beefheart defends it nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Edward Newgate. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Beefheart counters by clinching up.
Beefheart is trying to force a seperation but Newgate has the dominant position.

and Beefheart counters with a nice uppercut.

Beefheart throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Newgate tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Beefheart is in Newgate's guard.
Beefheart must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Beefheart throws a strike but Newgate rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Newgate looking to sit in guard and control but Beefheart gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Beefheart throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Newgate works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Beefheart postures up in Newgate's guard and throws a big left but Newgate blocks it.

Newgate looking for a guillotine here but Beefheart defends easily.
Newgate is breathing heavily.
Newgate looking to hit a scissor sweep but Beefheart is one step ahead there.
Beefheart throws a big right hand that misses.
Newgate wants to get back to his feet but Beefheart passes into half guard.

Beefheart tries to pass to full mount but Newgate defends it.

Beefheart thows a huge punch but Newgate dodges it nicely.

Beefheart is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Beefheart is looking to pass Newgate's guard but actually Newgate recovers to full guard.
Beefheart wants to control from the top but Newgate keeps moving.

Beefheart pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Newgate is keeping the position for now.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Newgate is desperately trying to improve his position but Beefheart has a good base and remains in mount.

Captain Beefheart showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Newgate tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Captain Beefheart comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Beefheart has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
