PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Foul Play (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gary Shaw (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Play kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genuis that is Simon Says-Pharaohe Monche. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gary Shaw!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, John Roberts and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shaw tries to clinch but Play is having none of it.

Play closes the distance and clinches.
A nice right hand lands inside from Shaw.
Shaw is looking to break free of the clinch but Play has double underhooks.

Play escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
No joy there for Play, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Shaw wants to clinch but Play slips to the side

and Play counters by moving into the clinch.
Play is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

Play escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Shaw throws a combination. Play tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Shaw tries to clinch up

and Play decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Shaw's guard.
Play trying to control the position from guard on top but Shaw is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Play stops Shaw from standing up.
Play working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Shaw is looking to stand up but Play isn't so interested in that idea.
Play postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Shaw is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Play is controlling him.
Shaw is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Shaw misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Play showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Shaw.
Shaw closes the distance looking to clinch

and Play moves into the clinch.
Play lands with a right to the head.
Play lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.

Play breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
A combination from Shaw does no damage.
Shaw looks gassed!

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Play falls off balance throwing a combination
and Shaw counters with a one-two to the body.
Play swings and misses with a shot to the body
and Shaw counters with a left and a right that stings Play.
Shaw tries to clinch but Play moves away
and Play counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Play clinches up against the cage.

Play manages to break the clinch.
Shaw blocks a head kick by Play.
Shaw thows a left - swing and a miss!
Play drops Shaw with a beautiful combination! Shaw stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Play is looking for the KO!


Shaw is rocked!
Play fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Shaw is still on wobbly legs! Can Play finish him?
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Play!
Play fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Shaw seems to have recovered his senses.
Play throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Shaw's head.

Play looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Shaw tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Play counters by clinching up.

Play breaks the clinch.
Play throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Shaw throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Gary Shaw is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Shaw tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Play counters with a series of strikes. Shaw will be more careful next time no doubt.
Play takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Play tries to close the distance and clinch but Shaw swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

and Play counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Shaw!
Shaw is squirming around, avoiding Play's attempts to control the action.
Shaw is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.

Play looking to control but Shaw is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Shaw squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.

Shaw somehow manages to escape the mount and get back to his feet!
Shaw lands with a hook. Play tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Danga de danga de dang - Shaw scores with a four punch combination!
Play throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Shaw.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Foul Play dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Gary Shaw seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Shaw counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Play thinking.
Foul Play is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Play counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.
Shaw throws a nice looking combination but Play bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Play shoots in looking for a takedown. Shaw tries to sprawl out of it but Play keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Shaw manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Play changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Shaw looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Shaw regains half guard there - taking advantage of Play's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
Shaw is refusing to be controlled, as Play sits in half guard.
Shaw is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Play scores with a couple of nice shots.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Play thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Play wants to free his trapped foot but Shaw is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Play is looking to take a break and control but Shaw is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Play thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Shaw's head.

Play has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Play frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Play wants to control the pace but Shaw is squirming around nicely.

Shaw is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.

Shaw's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. And we move into the final round!

Play shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Shaw as he jumps to the side.

and Play counters with a three punch combo that has Shaw backing up. Shaw nods at Play to acknowledge the strikes.

and Shaw counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Shaw.

Play breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

and Play counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Shaw takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

and Play counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Play prevents Shaw from standing back up.
Foul Play overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Play throwing shots but Shaw is blocking nicely.

Play is working for a kimura but Shaw is defending it quite comfortably.
Play is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Shaw can do to turn this around?
