The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Patterson shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Cotes but Cotes pushes him off and we're back to square one. Patterson throws a jab but it's blocked by Cotes. Patterson slips a jab and a cross from Cotes.

Patterson fails with a takedown attempt. Cotes misses with a few strikes there.
Cotes throws a series of punches but Patterson moves out of range. Some wild striking there from Cotes.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Patterson shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Cotes as he jumps to the side. Cotes throws a one two combo.

Cotes defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Patterson. Cotes stalks Patterson and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Patterson's face. Patterson staggers backwards, shaken. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Patterson closes the distance and clinches. Patterson is trying to drag Cotes to the mat but Cotes just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. Patterson is breathing heavily. Cotes breaks from the clinch.

Cotes lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Patterson circles away quickly and effectively. Cotes closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Abe Patterson's cut is getting worse. Patterson takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it. This is turning into a torrid day at the office for Patterson. He's trying desperately to land a takedown but he's failing miserably and getting slapped silly on the feet to compound his misery. Cotes scores with a crisp jab that stopped Patterson in his tracks.

Cotes throws a right hand that Patterson ducks under and follows up with a left that Patterson also avoids with ease. A combination from Cotes does no damage. Patterson showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Cotes.

Abe Patterson's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it. Patterson avoids a punch combination nicely.
Patterson lands with a shot to the body. Patterson feints and as Cotes raises his hands in defense, Patterson changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Cotes keeping full guard, as Patterson tries to pass. Patterson trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Cotes scoring with some ground and pound. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Cotes is pushing down on Patterson's leg trying to pass to half guard. Patterson is fighting to maintain full guard but Cotes has managed to sneak the leg through. Cotes seems to be working for a kimura but Patterson defends the submission attempt. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cotes scores with a nice strike. A momentary lapse in concentration from Cotes enables Patterson to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Cotes manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Patterson missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Patterson drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Cotes dives on top into guard. Cotes thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Patterson has his foot on Cotes's thigh. Cotes is aware though and is defending well. Cotes with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Patterson looking for a guillotine here but Cotes defends easily.

And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Abe Patterson. I think Patterson has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
