The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Uppercutt drives through with a takedown into guard. Uppercutt has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Smith is proving hard to escape from. Uppercutt trying to control the position from guard on top but Smith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Uppercutt is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Uppercutt drops back looking for a leg! Smith is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Smith manages to kick Uppercutt off! Uppercutt jumps back into Smith's guard. Smith controls Uppercutt momentarily but Uppercutt frees himself. Smith looking for a sweep. Not yet Smith, not yet. Uppercutt is looking to stand up but Smith won't let him. Smith wriggles free and stands up. Uppercutt dodges the punch combination from Smith.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith fails with the takedown. Smith misses with a few strikes there.
Uppercutt shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Smith counters with a nice double leg into side control. Uppercutt won't be happy with that. Uppercutt is breathing heavily. Smith cracks Uppercutt with a big elbow. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Uppercutt is looking for a sweep. Smith decides to take the fight back to the feet. Smith shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away. Uppercutt wants to hold on but Smith pushes him away. Smith lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Uppercutt hang on? Smith lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Smith dominating with strikes here.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smith lands a nice shot to the head. Uppercutt wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Smith controlling the position easily from mount. Uppercutt wants to hold on but Smith pushes him away. Smith wants to control the pace but Uppercutt is squirming around nicely. Smith sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Uppercutt could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

OK we're going to have a standup here. James Smith hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Uppercutt shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Smith counters with a head kick. Uppercutt shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Smith but Smith pushes him off and we're back to square one. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lance Uppercutt. That's going to take a lot out of him. Uppercutt doesn't succeed with the takedown and Smith counters with a thumping low kick. Smith fails with a takedown attempt. Uppercutt shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Smith is trying to defend but Uppercutt finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Smith tries to get to full guard but Uppercutt has control of the leg. Uppercutt is working for a kimura but Smith is defending it quite comfortably.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Uppercutt is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Uppercutt is thwarting Smith's attempts to control the position. Uppercutt works his foot free and advances to mount. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Smith is desperately trying to improve his position but Uppercutt has a good base and remains in mount. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
James Smith dominated that round. That's time! Uppercutt's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Uppercutt fails with the takedown and Smith counters with a head kick. Smith keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Uppercutt fails with the takedown. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lance Uppercutt. That's going to take a lot out of him. Smith misses with a wild combination.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Smith!
Uppercutt takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Uppercutt leaves Smith with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Smith misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Smith throws a head kick that misses. Uppercutt tries for a takedown but Smith circles away easily and Smith counters with a lovely straight right hand! Uppercutt will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Uppercutt shoots in looking for a takedown but Smith manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Uppercutt's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Uppercutt shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Smith manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Uppercutt postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Smith keeping moving, preventing Uppercutt from controlling successfully. Uppercutt landing with the ground and pound. Uppercutt wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving. Uppercutt trying to move into half guard but instead Smith has managed to sweep! Uppercutt is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Uppercutt tries to land a sweep but no joy. Uppercutt is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched. Uppercutt pulls Smith into guard.
Uppercutt preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Uppercutt pushes Smith off and scrambles back to his feet.
Nice sprawl there from Smith as Uppercutt shoots in. Smith throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Uppercutt gets the takedown into side control. Uppercutt tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Uppercutt working away.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Uppercutt tries to land with some ground and pound but misses. Uppercutt stands up and beckons Smith to his feet. Lance Uppercutt seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Uppercutt is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Smith's half guard. Uppercutt looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Lance Uppercutt overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Uppercutt is trying to control. Smith wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Smith is looking for a sweep. Uppercutt is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Uppercutt is working for a submission of some sort.
Uppercutt is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Smith doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Uppercutt.

He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Smith tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Uppercutt!
