Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ivo Petric! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Cosmos Sobolev! The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Valeri Chadov and Viktor Lagutenko.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Petric shoots for a double leg takedown but Sobolev sprawls well. He's pushed Petric's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Jeez, both these guys look absolutely knackered already, that's not a good sign! Petric misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Sobolev.
Sobolev wants to clinch. Sobolev misses with a head kick.
Sobolev shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Petric moves into the clinch. Sobolev wants a takedown but no success here.
Sobolev is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Petric pulls him back up using the underhooks. Ivo Petric has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cosmos Sobolev. Petric has picked Sobolev up - he's going for a ride! Petric dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Petric in particular looking to stall. Sobolev blocking the ground and pound attempt from Petric.
That's one minute gone in the round. Petric is looking to advance position but Sobolev won't allow it. Sobolev blocking the ground and pound attempt from Petric. Petric performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Petric seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Sobolev for as long as he can get away with.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Ivo Petric. Petric throws a head kick that Sobolev semi-blocks.
Sobolev with a poor takedown and Petric counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Petric. Petric has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Sobolev uses from the top position. Sobolev is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Petric wants to get back to his feet but Sobolev is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Petric has his hands on Sobolev's head, controlling the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sobolev wants to control from the top but Petric keeps moving. Petric will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Petric holds on and takes a little breather.
We're going to have a standup here because Ivo Petric wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Petric pushes Sobolev up against the cage in a clinch. Petric stops a takedown attempt from Sobolev.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Sobolev is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Petric pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Petric fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Sobolev tries to clinch but fails miserably so Petric counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Petric trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Sobolev has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Petric can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Petric decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Sobolev, up you get! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Ivo Petric dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Sobolev gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Petric moves into the clinch. Petric lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Sobolev or not. Petric turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control! Petric stands up. Sobolev with a lazy takedown attempt and Petric counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Petric. Sobolev drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Ivo Petric has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cosmos Sobolev. Petric digs a right hand underneath Sobolev's ribcage. Sobolev let out a lung full of air as it connected. Petric landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
Sobolev can't get the takedown.
Petric breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Petric shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Sobolev as he jumps to the side. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Petric takes the fight into the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Petric has hold of one of Sobolev's legs. Sobolev is fighting the takedown attempt but Petric gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard. Sobolev wants to stand but Petric is controlling the position. Petric sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Sobolev's guard. Petric stalling. Petric is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Petric takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Sobolev on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Petric wants to pass to mount but Sobolev is defending the position. Petric keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sobolev actively working from the bottom here. Petric is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Ivo Petric wasn't doing enough on the ground. Petric moves into the clinch. Petric pulls guard effortlessly. Petric looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Petric looking to hit a scissor sweep but Sobolev is one step ahead there. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Petric wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Ivo Petric dominated that second round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!
Sobolev misses with a takedown and Petric counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Petric gets to his feet - back to striking we go! A big left from Petric misses. Petric throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Petric fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Sobolev tries to clinch up and Petric counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Petric. This has been an exciting period of action! Petric wanted to stand there but Sobolev had control of the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Petric loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Petric is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Sobolev utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Petric drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Sobolev manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Petric has Sobolev in his guard. Petric is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Petric is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Sobolev wants to get back to his feet. Ivo Petric overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Petric is working for a submission of some sort.
Petric stands up and beckons Sobolev to join him on the feet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sobolev looks to clinch and Petric counters with a single leg into guard. Sobolev didn't expect that. Petric tries to free his leg and advance position but Sobolev is retaining full guard. Petric showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Petric scoring with punches to the head and body.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Petric is stalling in the full guard. Petric postures up in Sobolev's guard and throws a big left but Sobolev blocks it. Petric drops back looking for a leg! Sobolev is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Sobolev manages to kick Petric off! Petric jumps back into Sobolev's guard. Sobolev keeping full guard, as Petric tries to pass.
And that's the end of the fight! Ivo Petric showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Petric, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
