PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Junior Oliphant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Adam Cage (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Adam Cage told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Junior Oliphant!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Adam Cage!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Yves DeLean and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Oliphant moves into the clinch successfully.

Oliphant escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Oliphant looks to land a combination but Cage avoids it well.
Oliphant throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Cage wants to clinch

and Oliphant counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Oliphant.
Cage looking to control.
Cage managing to control the position.

Cage is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Oliphant scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Oliphant has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Oliphant wants to stand and escape but instead Cage has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Cage gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Oliphant misses with the combination.
Oliphant throws a series of strikes that have Cage backpedaling.

and Oliphant counters with a series of strikes. Cage will be more careful next time no doubt.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Oliphant.
Cage wants to control but Oliphant postures up.
Oliphant throws an elbow but Cage slips to the side and avoids it well.
Oliphant wants to control for a moment but Cage uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.
Oliphant is breathing heavily.

Cage manages to get to full guard.
Cage has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Oliphant in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Oliphant postures up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cage manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Oliphant manages to get himself to full guard.
Cage trying to control but Oliphant is working from the bottom.
Cage with a flurry of punches that miss.

Oliphant is looking for a triangle but Cage pushes his legs off easily.
Cage controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Cage wants to control from the top but Oliphant keeps moving.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Adam Cage wasn't active enough on the ground.
No joy there for Cage, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Cage throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Junior Oliphant dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Cage gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Oliphant stopping the sweep attempt from Cage.
Cage wants to stand and escape but Oliphant is having none of it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Oliphant is fighting to break Cage's control of his arms but Cage is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Cage not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Cage is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Oliphant defends well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Oliphant gets to his feet. Cage looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Oliphant misses with a jab, cross combination.

Oliphant closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Cage to the mat! Cage manages to get full guard.
Cage wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Oliphant trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Cage tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Oliphant trying to stand up but can't free himself from Cage's guard.

Cage pushes Oliphant off and gets back to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Cage shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Oliphant is trying to defend but Cage finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Cage working over Oliphant with some ground and pound. Oliphant looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Well, if Cage is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Cage's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Oliphant wants to improve his position but Cage is controlling well.
Cage has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Cage prevents Oliphant from getting the reversal.
Oliphant tries to lock up and control but Cage gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Cage looking to control and managing it successfully.
Cage tries to control but Oliphant wriggling away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Adam Cage showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Cage tries to clinch but Oliphant moves out of range.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Cage.

and Oliphant counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Oliphant.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Oliphant got a little sloppy there for a moment and Cage has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Oliphant has managed to get both his arms back between Cage's legs - danger averted.
Oliphant postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Cage has momentary wrist control but Oliphant slips an elbow through the middle.

Cage controlling the position.
Oliphant knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cage on the ground.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Oliphant is working Cage over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Cage is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Oliphant is aware though and is defending well.

Oliphant stands and steps away. Cage gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Oliphant has Cage up against the cage in a clinch.
Cage jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Oliphant walks away with a smile on his face. Cage gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Junior Oliphant has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Adam Cage.

and Oliphant counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Oliphant throws a strike but Cage rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Cage tries to free his leg and advance position but Oliphant is retaining full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Oliphant is working an open guard so Cage takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Cage throws a predictable looking body shot
and Oliphant counters with a left and a right that stings Cage.
Cage throws a right and a left that both miss.
Oliphant lands with an uppercut that bounces Cage off the cage and back into rage.
Oliphant blocks a head kick by Cage.
Cage has his takedown stuffed

and Oliphant counters with a single leg into guard. Cage didn't expect that.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Cage has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cage wants to sweep but no luck.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Cage is on top in guard.
Cage sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Oliphant's guard.
It looks like Cage is going to stand back up.

Cage is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Oliphant has managed to free his arm - good work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Cage wants to pass to mount but Oliphant is defending the position.
Cage seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Oliphant does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Oliphant manages to get to full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Junior Oliphant showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Oliphant has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
