The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Carr looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Carr closes the distance and clinches. Carr misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Ranzi.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Carr creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut. The referee is keeping an eye on Carr - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Carr wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Ranzi has him pressed against the cage. Carr tries a knee to the head but Ranzi blocks it.
Ranzi keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Carr's efforts to push away. Carr has had enough of the clinch but Ranzi keeps him there for the moment. Carr's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gian Matteo Ranzi is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Carr tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Ranzi ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Ranzi moves out of range of the body kick. Carr throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land. Carr finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Ranzi darts in trying to clinch and Carr counters with a left and a right that stings Ranzi.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Carr misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Ranzi wants to clinch and Carr counters with a three punch combo that has Ranzi backing up. Ranzi nods at Carr to acknowledge the strikes. Carr throws a right and a left that Ranzi avoids nicely. Carr rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Ranzi moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Carr explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ranzi closes the distance but Carr moves to the side and Carr counters with a head kick. Ranzi tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Carr counters with a straight right hand. Carr scores with a punch to the head. Carr misses with a low kick.
Ranzi wants to clinch but Carr slips to the side and Carr moves into the clinch.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Carr jumps into guard, dragging Ranzi to the mat.
Carr wants to stand up but Ranzi is controlling him. Ranzi is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Carr tries to land a sweep but no joy. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Ranzi drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Ranzi jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Ranzi pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Carr is keeping the position for now. Ranzi postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Carr is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Ranzi, into his guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ranzi wants to clinch and Carr counters with a nice double leg into guard. Carr avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Carr is pushing down on Ranzi's leg trying to pass to half guard. Ranzi is fighting to maintain full guard but Carr has managed to sneak the leg through. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Carr stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being. Ranzi looks to clinch and Carr counters with a one-two to the body. Ranzi avoids a punch combination nicely.

That's one minute gone in the round. Carr works to advance to full mount. Ranzi defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs. Ranzi is trying desperately to improve position. Ranzi has given up his back. Will we see Carr going for some submissions?
Carr doesn't have the hooks in and Ranzi manages to turn into his guard.
Ranzi drops back, looking for a kneebar! Carr looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Carr looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Carr! Carr decides to take the fight back to the feet. A punch combination from Carr misses.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Carr throws a series of punches but Ranzi avoids them all with ease. Carr will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Ranzi darts in trying to clinch and Carr counters with a good, hard body kick but Ranzi shrugs it off. Carr fakes a jab and then connects with a hook. Ranzi has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Carr.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ranzi moves to clinch but Carr breaks away and Carr counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Ranzi thinking. Carr shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Carr was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Ranzi manages to regain half guard. Good work. Carr is trying to control the action in half guard but Ranzi is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Ranzi looking for submissions off his back. Ranzi looking for submissions off his back. Ranzi is breathing heavily.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Carr looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Ranzi looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Carr works his way into full mount! The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Ranzi keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Carr tries to bum rush Ranzi with a series of wild strikes but Ranzi uses good footwork to avoid the assault. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Carr connects with a high kick. Carr's corner calls for a 1-2. Carr obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
That's one minute gone in the round. Carr thows a left - swing and a miss! A head kick from Carr lands but Ranzi takes it in his stride. Carr lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Carr. Carr darts in and clinches Ranzi up against the cage. Carr can't break the clinch.
Carr tries to break free but Ranzi pushes him back against the cage. Carr using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Ranzi has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Carr tries to land knees in the clinch but Ranzi avoids the damage to the body. Ranzi has Carr pressed against the cage, preventing Carr from circling away and getting back to striking at range. Ranzi keeps control of Carr as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. Ranzi tries to pull guard but Carr won't allow it.
Carr breaks from the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Carr throws out a leg kick but Ranzi moves out of range and Carr only half commits. Carr connects with a leg kick. Ranzi looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it. Carr shoots in for a double leg but Ranzi sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Carr tries to land a front kick but Ranzi steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. Ranzi closes the distance looking to clinch and Carr counters with a leg kick. Carr throws a series of punches but Ranzi moves out of range.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Carr tries a head kick but it misses.

That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Carr throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Carr pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Ranzi checks a low kick from Carr. Carr throws a sloppy head kick and Ranzi moves out of range easily. Carr is looking to slow Ranzi down with leg kicks. Carr closes the distance and clinches. Carr tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Ranzi misses with the head strike.

Elijah Carr is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Carr looking to throw knees to the head but Ranzi is blocking nicely.
