And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tony Mendez!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Gwen Towbar and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendez misses with a takedown attempt - Pope sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Pope misses with a body kick.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

Mendez throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Pope was covering up waiting for the punch and Mendez finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Mendez throwing strikes but missing.
Pope utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mendez postures up in Pope's guard and throws a big left but Pope blocks it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mendez is looking to work some ground and pound but Pope has wrist control.

Pope scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Pope throws a leg kick but Mendez moved away.
Pope looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Mendez fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Mendez tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Pope swivels and escapes.
Trent Pope has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tony Mendez.
Mendez avoids a kick to the body.
Both fighters circling a little - Pope finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.

Mendez shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Pope as he jumps to the side.
Trent Pope is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Pope takes a swing at Mendez's ribcage but misses.
Mendez tries for a takedown but Pope sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Pope looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Mendez checks a leg kick.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Pope throws a head kick that misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Trent Pope dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Mendez clinches with his opponent.
Pope scores with a hook to the body.
Pope unloads a knee to the mid-section. Mendez lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
Mendez tries to score a body lock takedown but Pope shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Mendez fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Pope breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Mendez thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Pope if he has to take too many more of those.
Pope tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Pope misses with an attempted mid kick.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mendez moves out of range as Pope throws a body kick.
Mendez scores with a shot to the body.

Mendez clinches up against the cage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Mendez is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Pope is keeping busy.
Pope misses with a knee strike.
Mendez tries for a takedown but Pope manages to get underhooks.
Trent Pope has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tony Mendez.
Pope prevents the takedown attempt.
Mendez tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Pope smiles and moves away.
Pope misses with a head kick.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pope lands a nice looking body kick.
Mendez takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Mendez is breathing heavily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Pope lands a big uppercut and Mendez crumbles to the floor! The ref thinks about stopping the fight but Mendez looks OK. Pope waves Mendez back to his feet!


Mendez is rocked!


It looks like Tony Mendez has been cut.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Pope cracks Mendez with a left hook right on the temple and Mendez goes down! He's out! Referee! Stop the fight! Pope lands a few more punches before the dopey ref steps in - hopefully Mendez is OK!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:07 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Trent Pope!
Trent Pope retains his heavyweight title!
