PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Matthew Dixon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jay Wafer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jay Wafer told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Matthew Dixon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jay Wafer!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Franklyn Lucas and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wafer tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Dixon throws out a loose jab but Wafer uses good head movement to avoid it.
Dixon throws a series of punches but Wafer avoids them all with ease.
Dixon misses with a wild body shot.
Some wild striking there from Dixon.
Dixon connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Wafer momentarily.
Wafer moves out of range as Dixon throws a body kick.
Dixon avoids the head kick by Wafer.
Dixon throws a hook but Wafer avoids it easily.
Wafer takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Dixon fails to land with a series of punches.
Wafer moves out of range as Dixon strikes.
Matthew Dixon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

It looks like Jay Wafer has been cut.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Dixon passes Wafer's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Wafer is still in real trouble! Can Dixon finish him?

Dixon is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Wafer has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Dixon is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Wafer is surviving well by controlling Dixon's body position as best he can.
Dixon wants to control the pace but Wafer is squirming around nicely.

Wafer shoots in for a takedown but Dixon shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Wafer shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Dixon but Dixon pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Dixon lands with a hook. Wafer tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.

Dixon throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Wafer tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Dixon is in Wafer's guard.

Wafer is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Dixon scores with the left hand. Wafer knows he should have avoided that one.
Dixon misses with a two punch combination.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Wafer lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Dixon has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Dixon and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

Dixon throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Wafer shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Dixon counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Dixon lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Wafer circles away quickly and effectively.
Wafer takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

Dixon fails to land with a series of punches.

Wafer moves into range and clinches up with Dixon.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Dixon tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Dixon escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Wafer is defended easily by Dixon.
Wafer is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Dixon uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Wafer has time to react.
Wafer throws a leg kick but Dixon sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Wafer takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Wafer changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Dixon tries to avoid it but Wafer manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Dixon to the ground. Dixon escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Wafer takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Wafer is trying to control but can't.
Wafer is looking to escape.

Dixon is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Dixon is taking a breather. Wafer says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Wafer won't allow Dixon to pass to mount.
Dixon seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Wafer does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Jay Wafer has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Matthew Dixon is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Dixon, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
