PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between John Thomas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alexander Asturiem (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Thomas's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Devil went down to Georgia. Asturiem is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Fernandinho - Sede de Justiça. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Thomas!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Alexander Asturiem!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, John Kavanagh and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thomas swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Asturiem steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Thomas.
Asturiem is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Thomas.
Asturiem looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
The fighters circling - Thomas throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
A jab from Asturiem does it's job there.
No joy there for Thomas, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Asturiem looks to land a combination but Thomas avoids it well.
Asturiem pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Thomas fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Asturiem takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
A telegraphed right hand from Thomas misses the target.
Asturiem stalks Thomas and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Thomas's face. Thomas staggers backwards, shaken.
Thomas lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Asturiem circles away quickly and effectively.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Thomas slips a jab and a cross from Asturiem.
Thomas blocks a head kick by Asturiem.
Asturiem on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Asturiem throws a sloppy body shot
and Thomas counters with a left and a right that stings Asturiem.
Thomas misses with a wild combination.
Asturiem misses with a double jab

and Thomas counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Thomas.
Asturiem wants to stand up but Thomas is controlling him.
Thomas seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Asturiem wants to get back to his feet but Thomas is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Thomas stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Asturiem swivels though and keeps the full guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Thomas stops Asturiem from standing up.
Thomas engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

The ref stands the fighters back up. John Thomas wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Asturiem ducks under a wild hook from Thomas.

Thomas closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Thomas lands in his opponent's guard.
Asturiem avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Thomas is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Thomas in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Thomas prevents Asturiem from getting back to his feet.
Thomas with a flurry of punches that miss.
Thomas might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Thomas controls from within his opponent's guard.
Thomas trying to control the position from guard on top but Asturiem is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Asturiem is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Thomas prevents Asturiem from getting back to his feet.
Asturiem keeping full guard, as Thomas tries to pass.
Thomas has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Asturiem working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Thomas.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Asturiem can do anything to dispel that myth.
Thomas stops Asturiem from standing up.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Asturiem fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Asturiem slips a jab from Thomas.
Thomas lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Asturiem backs up against the cage.

and Asturiem takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Thomas scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Thomas dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Asturiem throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Thomas throws a jab when Asturiem was well out of range.
A head kick by Thomas misses
enabling Asturiem to counter with a crisp jab.
Alexander Asturiem is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Asturiem slips a straight right by Thomas.
Thomas throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Asturiem.
Thomas is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Asturiem.
Asturiem ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Thomas moves away.
Asturiem stuffs the takedown.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Asturiem displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Thomas throws out the jab.
A punch combination from Thomas misses.

Thomas shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Thomas was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Thomas scores with a couple of good head shots there.

Thomas raining down shots from the mount!
Asturiem wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Thomas.
Asturiem blocking the ground and pound.
Thomas controlling the position easily from mount.
Asturiem is bucking up trying to escape but Thomas cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Thomas tries to control but Asturiem wriggling away.
BOOM! Thomas connects with a massive shot to the dome!


It looks like Alexander Asturiem has been cut.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Thomas in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.


Asturiem is rocked!


That has opened up Alexander Asturiem's cut even more.
Thomas softens up his opponent with a couple of shots there and then CRACK! One massive shot lands there and Asturiem is out cold! Thomas jumps to his feet and celebrates on the cage with the fans, who are, quite frankly, going absolutely mental!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:30 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). John Thomas!
