PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Django Derphardt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Hershey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hershey has chosen dumpy whumpy as his entrance music. Django Derphardt looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Django Derphardt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Steve Hershey!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hershey drives through with a takedown into guard.
Derphardt is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Hershey gets to his feet - Derphardt follows without any prompting.
Derphardt shoots and misses

and Hershey counters with a shoot takedown. Derphardt fights it but they end up in guard.
Hershey trying to control but Derphardt is working from the bottom.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Derphardt looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hershey is one step ahead there.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Derphardt looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Derphardt is breathing heavily.

Hershey wants to control from the top but Derphardt keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Steve Hershey was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Hershey bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Hershey misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Derphardt tries to escape but Hershey is in control.
Hershey wants to lay and pray for a moment but Derphardt keeps working.

Hershey decides to stand back up. Hershey steps back and let's Derphardt get back to his feet.

Derphardt with a lazy takedown attempt
and Hershey makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Derphardt really felt that one!
Derphardt stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Derphardt wants it to stay on the feet.
A punch combination from Hershey misses.

Hershey takes the fight into the clinch.

Hershey escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Hershey bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Hershey looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Derphardt is avoiding damage well.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Hershey is looking to take a break and control but Derphardt is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Hershey stands up and beckons Derphardt to his feet.

Hershey closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Derphardt quickly recovers to half guard.
Still in half guard, Hershey seems content to control.
Hershey is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Hershey is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Derphardt avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Hershey.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hershey looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Hershey dominated that round.
That's time! Derphardt's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Hershey throws a head kick that Derphardt semi-blocks.
Derphardt shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Hershey counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.

and Derphardt counters with a head kick. That will keep Hershey thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

and Hershey decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Derphardt's guard.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Hershey tries to score with some ground and pound. Derphardt controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Hershey is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Derphardt has escaped the position, nice work there.
Steve Hershey has got the better of the ground game so far.
Hershey is looking to take a break and control but Derphardt is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
A lull in the action here as Hershey stalls from top position.

Hershey decides to stand back up. Hershey steps back and let's Derphardt get back to his feet.

Hershey looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Derphardt is fending him off so far but Hershey persists. Nope, Derphardt circles away and we're back to standing.
Hershey is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

so Derphardt counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Django Derphardt has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Steve Hershey.
Derphardt tries to stand but Hershey is controlling from the bottom.
Hershey seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Derphardt won't allow Hershey to sweep him here.
Hershey pulls Derphardt in to control the position.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Hershey trying to keep a closed guard but Derphardt is proving a slippery customer.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Steve Hershey wasn't active enough on the ground.

Derphardt shoots and misses
and Hershey counters with a leg kick.

Hershey shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Hershey showed some decent athleticism there.
Derphardt wants to stand back up but Hershey manages to pass into side control.

Derphardt is trying to buck Hershey off.
Derphardt is looking to regain half guard here but Hershey keeps moving and retains side control.
Derphardt is not content to let Hershey control the position.

Hershey is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Derphardt is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Derphardt is looking for a sweep.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Hershey showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Hershey fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Hershey lands with a slapping head kick.

Derphardt looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Hershey trying to hold on to Derphardt's head to control him but Derphardt postures up.
Derphardt will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Hershey works his way to full guard. Good work.
Hershey is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Hershey lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Derphardt!

Hershey stands up from mount. Strange move.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

The fight stays on the outside here - Hershey looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Derphardt tries to keep at a distance but Hershey has taken the fight into the clinch.
Hershey tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Hershey keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Derphardt's efforts to push away.
Derphardt tries to break the clinch but Hershey is controlling the position.

Hershey breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Hershey shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Hershey is taking a breather. Derphardt says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Hershey is looking to take a break and control but Derphardt is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Hershey takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Derphardt tries to get to full guard but Hershey has control of the leg.

Hershey maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Derphardt could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Hershey has cracked it and Derphardt is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Hershey!
