PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Patrick Roy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Calvin Groves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Groves has chosen Famous-Puddle of Mudd as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Patrick Roy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Calvin Groves!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Gregory Folan and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice sprawl there from Roy as Groves shoots in.
Groves swings for the body but Roy moves out of range.
Roy keeps the fight on the outside.
Groves is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Groves is looking to clinch.
Roy connects with a solid leg kick.
Groves wants to clinch.

Roy gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Groves jumps into guard, dragging Roy to the mat.
Groves utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Roy passes Groves's left leg - he's now in half guard.

Roy is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Roy works his foot free and advances to mount.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Roy looking to control but Groves is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Patrick Roy.
Groves looks to clinch

and Roy counters with a shoot takedown. Groves fights it but they end up in guard.
Groves being controlled here, momentarily.
Roy throwing strikes from guard but Groves blocks nicely.

Roy drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Roy jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Roy accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Groves keeping moving, preventing Roy from controlling successfully.
Roy stands and throws Groves's legs to the side, diving into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Patrick Roy dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Groves misses with a low kick.
Groves doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Roy counters with a shoot takedown. Groves fights it but they end up in guard.
Roy slips nicely into half guard.
Groves is trying to stand.
Roy trying to control from Groves's half guard. Groves has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Groves looking for a sweep. Not yet Groves, not yet.

Roy drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Groves manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Roy has Groves in his guard.
Roy is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Roy is pressing down on Groves's thigh, looking to free his foot. Groves is holding on for now.
Roy moves nicely into side control.
Roy wants to lay and pray for a moment but Groves keeps working.
Groves wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Groves tries to improve position but can't.
Roy misses with the ground and pound.
Groves throwing some weak shots from the bottom that do no damage.

Roy thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Roy tries to score with some ground and pound. Groves controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

Groves tries to buck Roy off but Roy is having none of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they both work up against the meshing.
You can see the frustration on Groves's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Roy trying to control the position but Groves is working away.

Roy goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Groves rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Roy's guard! Nice work there by Groves!
Roy looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Groves slips nicely into half guard, despite the strikes coming from Roy.
Groves missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Groves throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Roy wants to control but Groves is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Patrick Roy dominated that second round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



Roy shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Roy trying to control the position from guard on top but Groves is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Roy drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Groves dives on top into guard.

Groves avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Roy lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Groves!
Roy fails to move to back control.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Groves slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Roy trying to pass the guard but Groves defending well.

Roy is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Groves is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:50 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Patrick Roy!
