PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Hiro Nagano (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Si Do Kan Karate (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Si Do Kan Karate told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Hiro Nagano! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Si Do Kan Karate! The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Sosuke Kotani and Shigeki Sano.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nagano wants to slow Karate down by chopping away at his legs. Karate shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Nagano but Nagano pushes him off and we're back to square one. Nagano cracks the inside of Karate's front leg. Nagano takes a kick to the body and keeps moving. No luck with that takedown attempt from Karate. Nagano throws a head kick that misses. Nagano throws a sloppy head kick and Karate moves out of range easily. Karate tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Nagano misses with a head kick.

Karate instigates a clinch. Karate wants a takedown but no success here.
Hiro Nagano has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Si Do Kan Karate. Nagano escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Karate shoots in looking for a takedown but Nagano manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Karate's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Nagano shoots in but no luck this time. Karate shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. A left and a right from Karate both land. Nice combination.
That's one minute gone in the round. Karate tries to land a front kick but Nagano steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. Karate takes one to the chin there.
It looks like Si Do Kan Karate has been cut. Karate looks gassed! Karate wants to clinch up but Nagano keeps it at a distance. Nagano throws a low kick but Karate avoids it. Karate shoots in but no luck this time. Nagano throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Nagano misses with a body shot.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Karate. Nagano tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. The fight stays on the outside here - Nagano looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Nagano shoots for a double leg takedown but Karate sprawls well. He's pushed Nagano's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Nagano looks to land a combination but Karate avoids it well. Nagano scores with a shot to the body.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The fight stays on the outside here - Nagano looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Nagano tries to clinch there but Karate circles away.
Nagano throws a combination that misses and Karate finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body. Nagano gets a clinch. Nagano lands a shoulder strike. Nagano wants to break free but Karate has control.

Nagano stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Nagano wants it to stay on the feet. Nagano fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Karate avoids it really well and circles away. Nagano fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Karate sprawls well initially but Nagano persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Nagano landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Nagano connects with a nice short shot to Karate's temple. Karate is looking to escape. Nagano is taking a breather. Karate says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Karate is trying to get back to full guard. Nagano gets to his feet - back to striking we go!

Nagano closes the distance and clinches up with Karate, looking for a takedown. Nagano pushes Karate against the cage but Karate circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Karate tries to score a power double leg takedown but Nagano sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Karate somewhat. Karate keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Hiro Nagano dominated that round. The cut man is working on Si Do Kan Karate's cut. That's time! Nagano's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Karate tries for a takedown but Nagano sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Nagano plants his feet and lands a nice head kick! Nagano keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Nagano throws a sloppy head kick and Karate counters with an inside leg kick. Nagano throws a sloppy body shot
and Karate counters with a stiff right hand. Nagano cracks Karate with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage. Nagano tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Karate manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Nagano swings for the body but Karate moves out of range.
Nagano is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Karate's half guard. Still in half guard, Nagano seems content to control. Nagano throws a strike but Karate avoids it easily and moves to full guard. Karate is wriggling around but Nagano manages to pass to half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Karate wants to get back to his feet. Nagano performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Nagano knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Karate on the ground. Nagano lands strikes from half guard. Nagano prevents Karate from improving his position. Nagano seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Nagano is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Karate! Nagano tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Nagano with a couple of short strikes. Nagano with shots to the head and body - Karate looks very uncomfortable down there. Karate is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Nagano working away from the top, dropping strikes. Nagano sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Karate is really trying hard to get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Nagano takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Nagano jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Karate manages to avoid the submission attempt. Karate tries to escape but Nagano is in control. Nagano remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hiro Nagano is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Karate shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Nagano defends it nicely. Karate misses with a looping left. Karate avoids the head kick by Nagano.
Nagano misses the shot to the body. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Good exchange - Nagano coming out on top. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Karate misses with a takedown attempt - Nagano sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Nagano throws a lazy head kick and Karate decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Nagano's guard. Karate with a flurry of punches that miss. Nagano lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Karate!
That's one minute gone in the round. Nagano looking to secure an arm triangle but Karate defends it well. The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Nagano cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Nagano lands with some strikes. Nagano controlling from mount. Karate is trying to escape the mount.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nagano raining down hammerfists from mount. Nagano cracks Karate with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Karate is in a horrible position here. Nagano smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Nagano landing strikes, looking to finish! A nice elbow there by Nagano.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nagano looking to secure an arm triangle but Karate defends it well. Nagano swings around for an armbar and he's got it! Wow, that came out of nowhere! What a finish!
