Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Matt Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Deep Sleep (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Deep Sleep has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Matt Jones's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Matt Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Deep Sleep!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Winston Howard and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sleep shoots for a double leg takedown but Jones sprawls well. He's pushed Sleep's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Sleep shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Sleep is looking to stand up but he'll have to free his leg first. Instead, Jones manages to get to full guard.
Jones is pulling down on Sleep's head. It's preventing any offense from Sleep, at least for the moment.
Sleep trying to control the position from guard on top but Jones is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Sleep seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Deep Sleep hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Sleep throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Jones shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Sleep as he jumps to the side.

Sleep gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Sleep fails to pull guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Sleep stalling.
Jones tries to score a body lock takedown but Sleep shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
A frustrated look appears on Sleep's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Jones works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Jones controlling from the top position.
Sleep is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Jones thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Sleep looking to hit a scissor sweep but Jones is one step ahead there.

Jones got a little sloppy there for a moment and Sleep has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Jones has managed to get both his arms back between Sleep's legs - danger averted.

Jones postures up in Sleep's guard and throws a big left but Sleep blocks it.
Sleep can't keep his opponent in guard - Jones advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Jones takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Sleep trying to control but Jones postures up.
Jones is trying to control the action in half guard but Sleep is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Jones seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Still in half guard, Jones seems content to control.
Jones seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Sleep does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

We're going to have a standup here because Matt Jones wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Sleep lands a body shot.

Jones tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Sleep wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Jones shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Sleep counters with a nice double leg into guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Matt Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Sleep working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Jones shoots in and bounces Sleep off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Jones decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Sleep lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Jones backs up against the cage.

Sleep stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Jones swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Sleep lands with a kick to the ribs.

Jones gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Sleep won't allow Jones to get back to his feet.
Sleep wants to control from the top but Jones keeps moving.
Sleep is looking to work some ground and pound but Jones has wrist control.

Sleep in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Sleep must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Jones manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Sleep manages to get himself to full guard.

Deep Sleep showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Deep Sleep wasn't active enough on the ground.
Sleep lets loose with a powerful body kick. Jones will feel that in the morning.
Sleep connects with a good right hand that stumbles Jones. Jones circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Jones distracts Sleep with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Jones stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sleep swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Sleep is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Jones stands up over Sleep, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Jones scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Sleep to see if he's OK.

Deep Sleep is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Matt Jones.
Well Sleep has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
