PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Craig David (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lyoto Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think David might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Craig David - Rise and Fall. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Craig David!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 13 - 0, fighting out of London, Lyoto Maia!
The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, Steven Brown and Andrew Berry.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
David blocks a head kick by Maia.
David takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
David takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Maia throws a body punch but David moves out of range.
David tries for a takedown but Maia sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Maia defends well against a solid takedown attempt from David.
Maia throws out a powerful jab.


It looks like Craig David has been cut.

Maia shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Maia engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Maia is looking to advance position but David has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Maia is desperately trying to improve his position but David has a good base and remains in mount.
David throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
David misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Maia reaches up and holds on to David to control the position.
David scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Maia bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Maia controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

David bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Maia's guard.
David passes Maia's left leg - he's now in half guard.

David thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Maia bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in David's guard.
Maia trying to control but David is working from the bottom.

David had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Maia defends it easily.
Maia throws a big right hand that misses.

Maia postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! David is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Maia, into his guard.
David looking to sit in guard and control but Maia gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


David shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Maia as he avoids it easily.
David takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Maia fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.

Maia is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Lyoto Maia.

Maia shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

David is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Maia pulls his head out easily.
Maia takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

David manages to get to full guard.
Maia is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

David tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Maia sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed David's guard.

David is defending against the submission attempts here by Maia.
Maia thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed David's head.

Maia is looking for a kimura but David is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Maia to get the leverage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lyoto Maia showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Maia fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt David.

Maia leaves David with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Craig David is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Maia connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Some bone on bone action there as David checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Maia throws a front kick that sends David stumbling back into the cage.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Maia.
Maia lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
A thudding body kick lands there by Maia!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Maia scoring well with a low kick there.
Maia sizes up David with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.

Maia closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Maia lands in his opponent's guard.

Maia slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Maia controls the position.
David is looking to reverse the position.
Maia is putting a hurting on David here, landing some big shots from side control.
Maia has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Maia in side control, throwing shots but David defends.

Maia tries to score with some ground and pound. David controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

Maia is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but David is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Maia tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

David is trying to get back to half guard.

Maia scores with a couple of short elbows.
David throws a couple of punches but he's in a bad position and they don't land.
Maia lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.

Maia is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. David knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Maia cracks David with a big right hand but David just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Maia tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
David is looking to regain half guard here but Maia keeps moving and retains side control.

Maia working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Maia goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, David has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Maia but great work by David.
Lyoto Maia is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Maia manages to work his way to half guard, despite David's best efforts.
Craig David has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
David thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

And that's the end of the fight!
Lyoto Maia comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Maia has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
